Former USF star taking on a New Challenge

Former South Florida baseball player Ryan Lockwood is taking on a new challenge now as he is preparing to become a Navy SEAL. Lockwood played three seasons under head coach Lelo Prado with his best season coming in 2008 when he had a 30 game hitting streak while being named a Freshman All-American. Last season, Coach Prado started receiving phone calls from Lockwood’s parents questioning what was going on with Ryan’s body as he was losing weight. Barret Loux signs with the Texas Rangers

On Friday, Barret Loux formerly of Texas A&M signed a free agent contract with the Texas Rangers. He was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Loux ended up coming to an agreement with the D-Backs for over 2 million dollars but ended up failing his physical due to shoulder issues that were discovered during the examination. Clemson’s Kyle Parker faces off against NC State’s Russell Wilson

Clemson starting quarterback Kyle Parker will face off against NC State Wolfpack and quarterback Russell Wilson tomorrow. Both quarterbacks are members of the Colorado Rockies organization after being selected in the 2010 MLB Draft. Parker was picked in the first round by Colorado and ended up signing for $1.4 million while Wilson signed for 200,000.

Dick Howser Trophy Campus Salute to Rice’s Anthony Rendon Set for this Saturday

DALLAS, Texas – The Dick Howser Trophy Committee will present its on-campus salute to 2010 Dick Howser Trophy winner Anthony Rendon of Rice this Saturday, October 16 at the Owls’ football game against Houston at Rice Stadium.

In addition to being honored as the winner at the conclusion of the college baseball season, each Howser Trophy winner is saluted once again on his campus the following academic year so that fans and administrators at his school can be a part of recognizing his achievements. Rendon will be re-presented the Howser Trophy by Jana Howser, daughter of Dick Howser and Executive Vice-President of the College Baseball Foundation, and Bo Carter, Executive Director of the NCBWA, during the first quarter of the Rice-UH football game which airs regionally on CSS.

Former Texas A&M RHP Barret Loux Works Out

Barret Loux worked out for 14 MLB teams on Friday afternoon in College Station, Texas. He was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the sixth overall pick but failed his physical due to shoulder and elbow concerns according to multiple reports. MLB declared Loux a free agent and gave the Diamondbacks compensatory picks. You can check out the MyFoxHouston report below which fails to talk about the reason the Diamondbacks failed to sign him.

St. Petersburg’s Dave Pano Resigns

The St. Petersburg Times is reporting that longtime St. Petersburg College baseball coach Dave Pano has resigned after offering an improper scholarship to a student-athlete. Coach Pano had accumulated a 392-180-1 over 13 seasons. In 2005, he led the school to its first state title and a second-place finish at the JUCO World Series.

Bryce Harper Introduced by the Nationals

The Washington Nationals held a news conference on Thursday afternoon to announce the signing of Bryce Harper. He was the first selection in the 2010 MLB Draft after an outstanding year at the College of Southern Nevada where he smashed the record books. As a high school freshman, he hit .599 batting average with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs in 38 games. He improved on that campaign in his sophomore season when he had .626 batting average, 14 home runs and 55 RBIs. After the season, Sports Illustrated labeled him as the “Chosen One” as he appeared on the cover of the magazine. They also called him the “Lebron James of Baseball.” He made an unorthodox move after his sophomore season as he got his GED and decided to head to junior college at the College of Southern Nevada. He continued to dominate at that level as he made the transition to the wood bat league hitting .442 with 29 home runs and 89 RBIs. In the first game of the NJCAA World Series, Harper hit for the cycle while going 6-for-7. The next day, he went 2-for-5 in the first game of a doubleheader and 6-for-6 with four home runs in the nightcap.

MLB Clubs holding College Coaches Hostage?

Ed Daniels of ABC 26 Sports of New Orleans recently wrote an article discussing how college coaches are being held hostage by MLB clubs during the draft. This was in response to many of LSU’s top recruits and top players signing deals with MLB clubs as I reported yesterday. (FULL ARTICLE). 2010 MLB Draft Signing Day Recap

Another signing deadline goes by and the story stays the same. The big market clubs especially in Boston and New York continue to wait until the last possible second to sign their draft picks. The Red Sox entering Monday had only signed three out of their top ten selections but ended up getting 12 out of the top 13 picks to sign which includes some marquee names in college baseball in LSU’s Anthony Ranaudo and Miami’s Chris Hernandez to name a few.

2010 Cape Cod Baseball All-League Team

Regular-season MVP Kolten Wong (Hawaii) and home run champion Jordan Ribera (Fresno State) lead the list of stars who were named to the 2010 Cape Cod Baseball League’s All-League team that was announced by commissioner Paul Galop this weekend.

A total of 24 players were selected to the elite team, with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and the Orleans Firebirds each placing four on the squad. The lone representative from the Cape League champion Cotuit Kettleers is starting pitcher Austin Wood (St. Petersburg), who went 3-0 with a 0.74 ERA this season.

Arizona Diamondbacks pull offer from Barret Loux

According to Jeff Passan over at Yahoo! Sports, the Arizona Diamondbacks have decided to pull their offer to the sixth overall selection in the 2010 MLB Draft, Barret Loux. The junior lefty from Texas A&M failed a physical in July, preventing the Diamondbacks from signing him. Arizona will now accept the seventh overall pick in 2011 in exchange for not signing Loux, a condition of the MLB draft compensation rule.

The Diamondbacks don’t suffer much damage in this deal. Sure they don’t get their first rounder, but they receive two in 2011. Loux, on the other hand, has a slew of tough decisions in front of him.

Texas A&M RHP Barret Loux to play in the Cape Cod League

Barret Loux of Texas A&M has been added to the Cotuit Kettleers roster today. Loux was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the sixth overall selection in the 2010 MLB Draft but hit a snag when he reportedly failed his physical due to a shoulder issue. He went 11-2 with a 2.83 ERA in 17 appearances (16 starts) while striking out 136 batters in only 105 innings of work. He held opponents to a .202 batting average.
