MikeMartin Mike Martin’s thirty-one years of college head coaching gives him the uncanny ability to predict the future – or so it seems.

Just prior to his team’s early May series at Boston College, the Florida State University baseball head coach boldly predicted over the phone that his Seminoles would face a hungry Eagles team. “Boston College is for real. Last week, they lost three games at Virginia Tech, so they’ll be mad. They’ll be tough.”

CBB Column: Ivy League Championship Series Preview

eisen When Dartmouth faces Columbia in the Ivy League Championships this weekend, pitching may be important, but Lions Coach Brett Boretti knows what the difference maker will be.

“I think offense, in the post season, is the difference maker,” claimed Boretti in a chat this week. “It is tough for both teams to get started offensively.”

The Big Green (23-15, 13-7) and Lions (25-19, 14-6) both are chock-filled of new players on offense, and when they faced each other in April, they played two very similar games, according to Boretti. “We both evenly played a day of baseball,” he said of the split. “We had one big inning one day, they had one big inning the next. Otherwise, it was even.”

CBB Column: Joe Leonard Setting the Pace for Pitt

JoeLeonardPitt When asked about his Pittsburgh Panthers’ 12-3 run so far this season, junior third baseman Joe Leonard gave a clear reason for their success. “Hitting is contagious.”

If Leonard’s statement is correct, than he’s the one setting the lead. Leonard is having an outstanding year for the Panthers, with a .455 batting percentage, along with a team leading 56 RBIs. His Panthers sit at second in the Big East, a spot not many within the conference expected them to be in the pre-season.

“All year, we have been hitting the ball well,” explained Leonard about the team’s performance. “If one guy has a bad at bat, we can pick it up and make it up for the team.”
