TD Ameritrade apparently has reached an agreement to buy the naming rights for Omaha’s new downtown baseball stadium.
The company and the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, which will operate the new stadium, are set to announce details of the agreement Wednesday morning, said Doug Parrott, a spokesman for MECA.
The $128 million, 24,000-seat ballpark at 14th and Webster Streets will host the College World Series for the first time in 2011.

Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon became the first player in Conference USA history to be named Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in the same season to headline the league’s top individual awards, as announced on Tuesday in Hattiesburg, Miss., the site of the 2009 Conference USA Baseball Championship. Southern Miss sophomore right-hander Todd McInnis was named the league’s Pitcher of the Year, while Newcomer of the Year honors went to East Carolina junior right-hander Chris Heston. The Keith LeClair Coach of the Year award returned to the East Carolina family, as Pirate head coach Billy Godwin won the award that is named for the former ECU skipper who courageously battled ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) before his passing in 2006. After helping lead UAB to a series victory over No. 4 Rice, the highest-ranked team that the Blazers have ever won a series against, junior DH Digger Towe has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week. The Pitcher of the Week honor went to East Carolina sophomore right-hander Seth Maness, who improved to 9-0 with an impressive outing against Memphis on Friday night. After winning the 2009 Conference USA regular season title, East Carolina will be the No.1 seed at the 2009 C-USA Baseball Championship, which begins Wednesday at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Pirates secured the crown after finishing off a three-game sweep of Memphis, while UAB rallied to defeat Rice on Saturday. For East Carolina (41-15), it is its second Conference USA regular season championship, as the Pirates won the 2004 title with a league-record 25 conference victories. The Pitcher of the Week honor is being shared by Southern Miss sophomore RHP Todd McInnis and UCF senior Caleb Graham, both of whom pitched gems on the road this past weekend.

Half of the league’s teams were in action in the city of Houston this weekend, with the results impacting the conference race. Rice moved one step closer to a fourth consecutive regular season C-USA title by taking two of three games from UCF. Second place East Carolina entered the weekend with a one game lead over third place Houston as the teams met at Cougar Field and the Pirates extended that lead with a two games to one series victory over the Cougars. HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A familiar face takes over at the helm of the Southern Miss baseball program as Director of Athletics Richard Giannini announced today that Scott Berry has been promoted to the head coaching position. Berry replaces Corky Palmer, who announced his retirement as the Golden Eagle coach last week after 12 seasons leading the Southern Miss baseball team. Berry’s promotion is pending approval by the Board of Trustees, Institute of Higher Learning.
Berry has been Palmer’s right-hand man for the last nine seasons at Southern Miss, and it is no coincidence that the school is in the midst of the most successful run in school history advancing to six consecutive NCAA regionals. Continue reading Southern Miss names Berry as head coach
The fact that Corky Palmer will no longer be the head coach of the Southern Miss baseball team is beginning to settle in as he was honored with a framed No. 44 jersey prior to Saturday’s game against rival Tulane.
As Golden Eagle fans look to a future without Palmer, USM athletic director Richard Giannini is in the early stages of finding his replacement.
