Conference USA Weekend Preview (March 14th-16th)

#18 Rice (12-6, 2-1) at #29 FIU (16-1, 3-0)

Friday at 5 p.m. CT (Zech Lemond vs. Mike Franco)

Saturday at 3 p.m. CT (Blake Fox vs. TBA)

Sunday at 10 a.m. CT (Kevin McCanna vs. Robby Kalaf)

The Matchup

Rice won its opening weekend series over Old Dominion, and then during the week they beat Texas A&M Corpus Christi and #27 TCU. The offense has really come on as of late and now owns a combined batting average of .272, scoring just over 5 runs a game. The pitching has been solid as usual with a team ERA of 2.49 in 170 innings. Continue reading

Conference USA Weekend Recap (March 7th-9th)

UAB (13-3, 2-1)-MTSU (5-9, 1-2)

Game 1 – UAB: 3 MTSU: 4. WP – Cody Tollison LP – Cory Eller SV – Paul Mittura. MTSU starting pitcher Zac Curtis went 7.2 innings, only allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 3 walks, while matching a career-high with 10 strikeouts. UAB starter Chase Mallard gave up his first and second runs of the season, ending his consecutive innings scoreless streak at 26. In all, Mallard lasted 8 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 8. MTSU first baseman Trent Miller was 1-3 with a walk and a run scored in the game. With the game tied at two apiece going to the top of the 9th, the Blue Raiders plated one run on a sac fly and another on a wild pitch, which would end up proving to be the game-winning run as UAB got one back in the bottom of the 9th. MAC Weekend Recap (March 7th-March 9th)

Western Michigan (7-7)-Maine (4-11), Northeastern (4-8) and Georgetown (3-7)

Game 1 – WMU: 2 Northeastern: 1 (10). WP – Derek Schneider LP – Burcroff. WMU starter Steve Laudicina pitched 8.1 innings, only giving up 1 ER on 6 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 6. Schneider pitched 1.2 innings of relief not allowing a hit or walk, while picking up the win. At the plate for WMU, Andrew Sohn was 1-3 with an RBI. Continue reading

Conference USA Weekend Preview (March 7th-9th)

Florida Atlantic (10-3) at UTSA (9-4)
FAU is 7-1 in their last eight games and are coming off a mid-week two game sweep over Boston College. The Owls have even gained some votes in recent polls after their current hot streak. Meanwhile, UTSA has been on a bit of a hot streak of their own winning four of their past five games including two mid-week wins. Continue reading

Northern Illinois at #5 Oregon State

The Matchup

Northern Illinois has not made it easy on themselves this season, taking on some of the best teams in the country. This weekend they’ll face their toughest test of the year as they take on Oregon State (10-3). The Huskies overall record of 1-8-1 doesn’t describe the type of ability this team has—they’ve lost four games by 2 runs or less—but they’ll need that talent to be on full display this weekend if they are going to have a chance to compete with the Beavers. MAC Weekend Preview (Feb. 28th-March 2nd)

MAC Series of the Week
Eastern Michigan Eagles (4-4) vs. Kentucky Wildcats (6-2)

The Matchup

Eastern Michigan started out the year on a high note by taking down then ranked #16 Clemson 6-5 before dropping the last two games of the series 5-3 and 9-7. They then went on to take two-out-three from UT-Martin in the second weekend series of the year, and they split against Austin Peay in a double-header earlier this week. Kentucky has won four games in a row, and in their first game of the year they took down #1-ranked Virginia 8-2. Continue reading


Rice Faces Touch Challenge in Houston College Classic

The Matchups
Rice is coming off a weekend sweep over Purdue followed by a mid-week loss to Sam Houston State; meanwhile, the Longhorns are coming off a series victory over Stanford, and they picked up a mid-week win over UT-Pan America. TCU picked up three wins last weekend in a tournament that included BYU, Texas A&M Corpus Christ, and UTSA, but then they dropped their mid-week game 10-2 to Texas Arlington. The Red Raiders started out the year winning three-out-four against then ranked #3 Indiana. They then went on to sweep a three-game series over Oral Roberts and picked up a mid-week win over BYU.
