Columbia brings in Nine for 2017-2018

NEW YORK – Columbia baseball head coach Brett Boretti has announced the addition of nine new student-athletes that will join the Lions this fall. The class is comprised of four pitchers, four infielders and a utility player hailing from eight different states. Seven will enter the fold as first-years, while two are transfers.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2017 graduate of Wilton High School … Won Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title in 2017 … Named 2017 Ruden Report Spring Male Athlete of Year and was an All-FCIAC pitcher in 2017 … 5-1 with 0.75 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 46.3 innings as senior … In 2016, pitched to an ERA of 0.94 with 67 strikeouts in 64 innings of work … Fanned 10 batters in a complete game win in FCIAC Championship Game … Selected All-FCIAC East as junior … Four-year honor roll student … National Latin Exam Cum Laude in 2015.

PERSONAL: Born June 2, 1999 … Son of Lorraine and Kevin Black … Has three brothers, Kevin, Thomas and Peter … Played for American Legion Post 86 19U … Enrolled in Columbia College and plans on majoring in Economics.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2016 graduate of John Carroll Catholic in Birmingham, Alabama … Spent post-grad year at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts … First-ever two-year baseball captain with the Cavaliers… Named Collegiate League of the Palm Beaches All-Star in 2017 … Second Team All-State in 2016 … Three-time All-Over The Mountain Team … Hit .454 with four homers and 15 stolen bases in 2016 … Also led state in doubles (15) that season … Member of National Honor Society

PERSONAL: Born November 18, 1997 … Son of Lorraine and Robert Cerfolio … Has two brothers, Rob and Alec … Father, Robert, played four years of baseball and one season of hockey at the University of Rochester … Brother Rob pitched at Yale for four years and was drafted by the Dodgers in 2013 … Played for The Prospect Lab (TPL) … Enrolled in Columbia College.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2017 graduate of West Morris Mendham High School … Played four years of baseball … 2017 Rawlings Perfect Game Preseason All-Northeast Region Honorable Mention … NJAC All-Conference First Team as junior and senior … Star Ledger All-State Group 3 Third Team, Daily Record All-County Second Team in 2016 … Named NJAC All-Conference Second Team and Daily Record Honorable Mention as sophomore … Also played soccer for two seasons, winning a State Group 3 Championship in 2015.

PERSONAL: Born January 7, 1999 … Son of Patty Sly and Bob Chernow … Has two sisters, Robin and Melissa … Sister Robin played soccer and ran track at Haverford College from 2011-15 … Played for New Jersey Diamond Jacks Super … Enrolled in Columbia College.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2017 graduate of the Hopkins School in New Haven, Connecticut … Four-year letterwinneras a pitcher and centerfielder … All-Fairchester League in 2017 … Team posted a 10-7 record in 2017 and reached Fairchester League semifinals … Named to 2016 WWBA 16U National Championship All-Tournament Team … Pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in five innings against Greens Farms Academy in 2016 … Graduated Cum Laude

PERSONAL: Born May 2, 1999 … Son of Stephanie and Bill Meury … Has one brother, Kyle, and one sister, Caroline … Father, Bill, played baseball at Maryland, was drafted in the 20th round by the San Diego Padres in 1990 and enjoyed a two-year professional career … Played summer ball for Connecticut Wolfpack (2014-16) and The Clubhouse (2017) … Participated in 2012 Little League World Series for New England … Enrolled in Columbia College and plans to pursue degree in Economics.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2017 graduate of Santa Margarita Catholic High School … Earned three letters on the varsity baseball team … Team captain in 2017 … Selected to Trinity League All-Star Team … Batted .318 with 12 RBI as senior … Hit .313 with 14 RBI in 2016 … Scholar-athlete all four years.

PERSONAL: Born September 30, 1998 … Son of Hillary and Dan Post … Has two brothers, Will and Ben … Brother Benji plays baseball at USF … Played summer ball for Garciaparra Baseball Group (GBG), the No. 2 18U team in nation … Enrolled in Columbia College and plans to major in finance.

AT WHITMAN: Appeared in 32 games in three years … Struck out 14 batters in 18 innings of work in 2017 … Hit .373 as sophomore … 2014-15 and 2016-17 Northwest Conference Scholar Athlete … Sheila Berger Prize for Outstanding 3-2 Majors.

AT McLENNAN: Qualified for JuCo World Series, finishing fifth overall, along with winning conference and regional championship in 2017 … Earned conference title in 2016 … Hit .298 with 22 RBI in 27 games in 2016 … Won team’s Academic Excellency Award in as sophomore.
