“I’m excited for the opportunity to be the head coach at Maine for the spring of 2017,” said Derba. “From here on out, its business as usual. Our goals do not change as we will continue to work and build a victorious path towards the America East Championship. I appreciate the opportunity Karlton Creech has granted me and wish the best of luck to Coach Trimper.”
Steve Trimper, who spent the past 11 years at the helm of the UMaine baseball team, will be named the head coach at Stetson University on Monday, Dec. 19.
Derba, who was promoted to associate head coach in the summer of 2015, will begin his fourth season on staff at Maine. After a highly decorated playing career at Manhattan College, Derba was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 30th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. His career in the Cardinal system spanned six seasons, advancing as high as AAA Memphis (PCL). Derba was a member of the 2012 Texas League champion Springfield Cardinals. He retired following the 2012 season to pursue a career in coaching. Derba, who played two years for Trimper at Manhattan College, rejoined his college coach on staff at Maine. Prior to his hire at Maine, Derba served a year as the hitting and catching coach for the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Following the 2016-17 season, the University of Maine will conduct a national search for its next head coach.
