Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham baseball head coach Kevin Leighton announced the team’s 2017 schedule today. It features 27 home games, non-conference weekend series in Texas, California, and North Carolina, and match-ups with three NCAA teams from a year ago.
Except for 1944, the Fordham baseball program has played every year since 1859 and stands as the winningest program in NCAA history. The Rams will be competing for their ninth Atlantic 10 Championship tournament berth in the last 14 years, in hopes of being at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship, May 24-27, which will be hosted at Saint Louis’ Billiken Sports Center.
Fordham kicks off the season in Houston, Texas, on February 17th, as the Rams open a weekend series at Houston Baptist. It will be Fordham’s first-ever trip to the Lone Star State.
The Rams’ then continue west to California for a three-game series at Long Beach State, February 24-26, for Fordham’s second trip to California in the last three seasons. The Dirtbags are one of the three teams on Fordham’s schedule to make the NCAA Tournament a year ago, along with Fairfield and Rhode Island.
For the second straight year, Fordham will play a neutral site, four-game series, against Canisius from March 3-5, in Wilson, North Carolina. The two teams split a four-game set last season.
After three weekends on the road, the Rams will have their home opener with a doubleheader on March 8th against crosstown rival Manhattan, which will be followed by home games against UMass-Lowell (three games – Mar. 11-12), NJIT (Mar. 14), Albany (Mar. 17), Sacred Heart (Mar. 18), and Hofstra (Mar. 19).
Other non-conference home games are scheduled against Saint Peter’s (Apr. 5), Columbia (Apr. 19), Yale (Apr. 25), and LIU-Brooklyn (three games – May 5-7), while the remaining non-league road games consist of match-ups at Iona (Mar. 22), Saint Peter’s (Mar. 28), Siena (Apr. 11), Fairfield (Apr. 18), and Hofstra (May 2).
In conference play, Fordham’s home series opponents will be against La Salle (March 31-April 2), Saint Joseph’s (April 13-15), VCU (April 21-23), and Massachusetts (May 12-14). The Rams will make conference road trips to George Mason (Mar. 24-26), Saint Louis (April 7-9), Rhode Island (April 28-30), and St. Bonaventure (May 18-20).
