ACC Recap for February 14

(2) Virginia at East Carolina (Game 1)

The Virginia offense was led by freshman Charlie Cody who accounted for two hits and a pair of runs scored in Virginia’s 9-2 win over East Carolina. Helping Cody supply the offense was also designated hitter Matt Thaiss who went 2-4 with a home run and a pair of RBIs. Sophomore Connor Jones recorded the win today after pitching 6 complete innings and giving up 1 run and striking out 8 Pirate batters.

(2) Virginia at East Carolina (Game 2)

In the second game of todays double –header the Cavaliers picked up their third win of the year after a rather close ball game with the East Carolina Pirates. Starting pitcher Brandon Waddell gave up 7 hits and 2 earned runs through 4 innings of work. Jack Roberts who pitched exceptionally well in his season debut replaced Waddell in the top of the 5th inning and only allowed 1 hit in 4 innings pitched. Josh Sborz came on to close the game out for the Cavaliers and in doing so struck out 1 batter for his second save in back to back nights.

Seton Hall at (14) North Carolina (Game 1)

Benton Moss picked up his first win of the year for the Tar Heels in a solid outing in which he threw 5 innings, recorded 9 strikeouts and allowed 2 runs in a 10-4 Tar Heel victory. Landon Lassiter and Adrian Chacon led the North Carolina offense with 3 hits apiece and crossed the plate one time. Tyler Ramirez also contributed with 2 hits, 2 runs and a RBI for the Heels.

Seton Hall at (14) North Carolina (Game 2)

In game two of today’s DH, J.B. Bukauskas pitched the Tar Heels to a 9-5 victory over Seton Hall. Bukauskas struck out 5, gave up 4 hits and didn’t allow a runner to score in 5 innings pitched. Joe Dudek provided the spark the Tar Heels needed to ignite the offense with his 3 RBIs and 2 hits. Also collecting a pair of hits was first baseman Anthony Chacon.

(10) Louisville at South Florida

Drew Harrington didn’t allow a run through 4.1 innings pitched in a 7-3 victory over South Florida. Harrington struck out nine and walked just one while giving up two hits.

Rutgers at (13) Miami (Game 1)

The University of Miami Hurricanes get there second win of the year behind strong pitching from junior Thomas Woodrey. Woodrey gave up 3 runs, 5 hits and recorded 2 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. David Thompson, Christopher Barr and Zach Collins provided timely hitting and key RBIs in the Hurricanes 9-5 victory of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers at (13) Miami (Game 2)

In game two of the double-header Enrique Sosa proved too much for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to handle as the Panama native recorded 10 strikeouts, didn’t allow any runs and only gave up 1 hit in 5.2 innings. David Thompson went 3-4 and crossed the plate twice, pacing the offense to a 15 hit outburst.

Oakland at (16) Florida State 

Dylan Busby catapulted the Seminole offense with his 3-4 day at the plate, which included 4 RBIs while Delph, and De each contributed to the offense with 2 hits apiece. B.J. Biegalski recorded his first win of the year in 5 innings of work. His final line was 5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER and 9 SO.

Boston College vs. Xavier (Game 1)

Chris Shaw, Michael Strem and Blake Butera led the Boston College offense in today’s 14-7 win over Xavier. Shaw went 2-4 with 3 RBIs and a homer. Strem went 3-6 with 2 RBIs and Butera went 2-4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Luke Fernandes picked up the win today in 2.0 innings of work where he struck out two, walked two and let up one run.

Boston College vs. South Carolina Upstate (Game 2)

Sophomore pitcher Justin Dunn earned his first win of the season while recording five strikeouts, allowing two hits, one run and two walks. Chris Shaw walked three time and knocked in two RBIs in BC’s 5-4 victory over South Carolina Upstate.

Bucknell vs. Wake Forest (Game 1)

 Nine of the fifteen hits Bucknell recorded came from the top of the order. Brett Smith, Anthony Gingerelli and Joe Ogren each had three hits and crossed the plate a combined ten times in Bison’s 16-12 victory over Wake Forest. Recording his first win of the year was senior Bryson Hough. He struck out 5, walked 2 and gave up 2 earned runs in 5 innings of work.

VCU vs. Wake Forest (Game 2)

Sophomore pitcher Parker Dunshee pitched an impressive 8.1 innings not allowing a run. Dunshee also recorded 11 strikeouts and only allowed 5 hits. Stuart Fairchild provided the lone offense with a solo home run to give Wake Forest the only run of the game.

Davidson at N.C. State 

Evan Mendoza won his first game of the year and in 5 innings pitched recorded 4 strikeouts, 1 walk and allowed just 1 run to cross the plate. Mendoza received a ton of help from the N.C. State offense, in particular, Preston Palmeiro. Palmeiro went an impressive 5-5 on the day with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

Fordham at Georgia Tech

Fordham bats were alive and well today in the 9-4 victory over Georgia Tech. Matthew Kozuch, Charles Galiano, Luke Stampfl, Ryan McNally and Ian Edmiston each combined for 2 hits apiece which accounted for 10 of the 13 hits recorded by Fordham. Of the five hitters that recorded two hits apiece, Luke Stampfl stood out among the bats with a 5 RBI day and a solid performance at shortstop. Recording the win for Fordham is Jimmy Murphy who threw 4 scoreless innings before giving up a run in the 5th and then being replaced by Kirk Haynes, Jr.

Fordham at Georgia Tech

In the second game of today’s twin bill, Georgia Tech salvaged the second game with a 7-5 victory over Fordham. Keenan Innis supplied most of the offense with his 3-3 day at the plate. Arden Pabst recorded 2 hits and 2 RBIs to compliment Innis and his three hits. Ben Parr received his first win of the year despite giving up 4 earned runs and 8 hits in 5 innings pitched.

Kansas State vs. Pittsburgh

Junior Tyler Wolfe and senior Max Brown paced the Kansas State offense to a 7-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers in Port Charlotte, Florida. Wolfe and Brown combined for 4 of K State’s 6 hits and also combined for 2 of K State’s 7 runs. Getting his first win of the year for Kansas State is junior Levi Mavorhis who recorded 3 strikeouts and allowed 5 hits in 6 scoreless innings.

Notre Dame at Oklahoma

Notre Dame fought off a four run ninth inning to defeat the Oklahoma Sooners 10-9. The Notre Dame offense was led by Calvin Biggio who went 3-5 with 2 runs scored and a RBI. Brandon Bielak let up 1 earned run in 5 innings of work which was good enough to receive his first win of the year.

LP: Hansen (0-1)

Virginia Tech vs. Mercer 

Saige Jenco and Erik Payne led the offense with three hits each and crossed the plate a combined 4 times. Payne accounted for 4 of Virginia Tech’s 11 runs with a 4 RBI day. Brendon Hayden found his stroke by lacing 2 hits and recording 2 RBIs in today’s 11-4 victory over Mercer. Winning pitcher Aaron McGarity struck out 4, gave up 3 hits and 4 earned runs in 5 innings pitched. Luke Scherzer recorded his first save of the year. He threw 3 innings and struck out 6 without giving up any runs.

West Virginia at Clemson

Zach Erwin allowed just one run on four hits in 6.0 innings pitch to lead Clemson to 4-2 win over West Virginia. Erwin gave up just one walk and recorded five strikeouts before Drew Moyer came on to record his first save of the year.
