OMAHA, Neb. — Texas took advantage of four Louisville errors to take a 4-1 victory Monday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park. The Longhorns kept their season alive while Louisville’s 2014 College World Series tour is over.

Texas (44-20) scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a commanding 3-0 lead behind the arm of Parker French, who allowed one run on four hits in 7.1 innings to improve to 7-5.

The Longhorns’ first run came on a Ben Johnson sacrifice fly after Zane Gurwitz led off with a double and was sacrificed to third base.

“We broke through and had a miracle take place hit a sacrifice fly with a runner on third base that scored a run,” Texas head coach Augie Garrido remarked.

But Texas’ other three runs came with a little assistance. C.J. Hinojosa scored to make it 2-0 in the fourth inning when Kacy Clemens‘ grounder to shortstop was misplayed by Sutton Whiting.

A pair of errors on potential double play balls allowed Mark Payton to come around in the fifth inning. A high throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt kept Madison Carter on base in the ninth inning. Carter later scored on another sacrifice fly, this time by Brooks Marlow.

Texas reliever Travis Duke retired all five batters he faced to secure his first save of the season. Louisville starter Anthony Kidston (9-1) didn’t pitch poorly, but he took his first career loss (15-1) after giving up three runs (two earned) in eight innings.

Texas advances to play the loser of the Vanderbilt/UC Irvine nightcap. That matchup will take place Wednesday night at 7 p.m. CST. Louisville‘s season ends with a two-and-que effort in Omaha for the second season in a row. The Cardinals finish 50-17 on the year.

“I’m really proud of this group. This was a fun, fun year. And really proud these five seniors kept the culture alive,” Louisville head coach Dan McDonnell said. “As we always say the season’s going to end, this is the place you want it to end. And for their efforts we’ll
be better off in the future and we’ll be back again.”
