2014 Houston Regional: Day 2 Recap

Texas A&M 7 George Mason 3

HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M Aggies kept their season alive with a 7-3 win over the George Mason Patriots in an elimination game at the NCAA Houston Regional at Reckling Park.

Texas A&M pounded out 16 hits in the win. Krey Bratsen spearheaded the arsenal, going 4-for-4 with one double, one run and one RBI. With the game, Bratsen became the Aggies’ all-time leader in games played with 242, passing Scott Livingstone’s mark of 241 set from 1985-88.

Blake Allemand went 3-for-5 with one double and one run. Cole Lankford, Logan Nottebrok and Troy Stein each added two hits. Stein extended his season-long hit streak to eight games.

Texas 3 Rice 2 (11 innings) 

HOUSTON — Brooks Marlow broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the 11th inning with a single up the middle scoring Zane Gurwitz and the No. 2 seed Texas Longhorns defeated No. 1 seed Rice, 3-2, to take control of the Houston Regional.

Texas (40-18) moves to 2-0 in regional play and will meet the winner of the Rice vs. Texas A&M game Sunday night at 7 p.m.

In an 11-inning marathon that did not end until 1:12 a.m., the Longhorns got excellent pitching from starter Parker French and reliever John Curtiss who retired all 12 Owls that he faced. French threw 6 2/3 strong innings, yielding just two runs and striking out six. Curtiss took command of the game as soon as he entered in the top of the eighth inning, striking out four in his four innings of work.
