Binghamton edges Stony Brook 4-3 in an Instant Classic

No call made on a line drive? Comeback innings for the last three innings by Stony Brook? What else could happen on Sunday?

I been around College Baseball for about 25 years and don’t remember a more classic well played game that would be overshadowed by the umpiring crew.

Binghamton was holding a 4-3 lead with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning on the Stony Brook Seawolves with runners on first and second. The Bearcats had sophomore RHP Tsuyoshi Horibata on the mound facing Casey Baker. He would hit a line drive to Reed Gamache who caught it right above the ground. The problem was none of the four umpires on the field made a call on the play on whether it was a catch or not. Gamache tossed to second base to double off the runner and end the game you would think. But the umpires still had not made a decision.

They proceeded to call time after Gamache tossed to second to double off the runner. After a brief conference, they ruled that Gamache did catch the ball in the air setting off a massive celebration at the mound with Horibata and his teammates.

I asked the America East conference for a statement from the umpires on the ruling on the final play but spokesman Jared Hager stated that it was conference policy to not make officials available to the media.

This lack of a call by the umpires really overshadowed a great game which was 1-1 through six innings before Binghamton and Stony Brook traded off runs in the seventh and eighth innings to head to the ninth inning with the score tied.

With two outs in the ninth and the bases loaded, Jake Thomas from Binghamton came to the plate. He ripped a single to center scoring Zach Blanden from third with the winning run.
