No. 1 Virginia Outlasts No. 4 Florida State in 10 Innings, 5-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Derek Fisher (Jr., Rexmont, Pa.) hit a tiebreaking two-run double with two outs in the 10th inning to lift the No. 1-ranked Virginia baseball team to a 5-3 win at No. 4 Florida State Friday in the opener of a key three-game series at Dick Howser Stadium. Fisher hit three doubles in the victory as the Cavaliers (36-7, 17-5 ACC) came back from a two-run deficit.

John La Prise (So., Exton, Pa.) and Mike Papi (Jr., Tunkhannock, Pa.) homered for Virginia, while Branden Cogswell (Jr., Ballston Lake, N.Y.), Daniel Pinero (Fr., Toronto, Ontario) and Nick Howard (Jr., Olney, Md.) each recorded two hits.

UVa reliever Whit Mayberry (Sr., Alexandria, Va.) fired three scoreless innings and got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth inning. He earned the win and improved to 4-0 on the year. Howard struck out the side in the 10th to nab his league-leading 14th save.

Musgrave Goes Eight Shutout Innings in Win over K-State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 25, 2014) – Junior left-hander Harrison Musgrave went eight shutout innings and the bats stayed hot as the WVU baseball team defeated Kansas State, 10-1, on Friday evening at Hawley Field.

The Mountaineers improved to 22-16 on the season and 5-7 in the Big 12. Kansas State fell to 23-20 on the year and 4-9 in the conference.

Musgrave (4-3) picked up his first win since March 8, spreading three hits across eight innings of work, allowing no runs with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Western Michigan’s  Laudicina Hurls Complete-Game Shutout 

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Senior left-handed pitcher Steve Laudicina struck out five in a complete-game shutout, powering Western Michigan to a 7-0 victory over visiting Northern Illinois in game one of this weekend’s three-game Mid-American Conference series at Homer Stryker Field.

It was the third time this season Laudicina has gone the distance and his first career shutout. The three complete games is the most by a Bronco pitcher since J.R. Mathes tossed three in 2004. Mathes was later taken in the 16th round of the MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs that year.

Laudicina passed Mathes, as well as 4th round MLB draft pick Ethan Hollingsworth on the WMU career strikeout list with his five K’s, jumping to sixth all-time with 198.

Georgia Tech’s Josh Heddinger outduels Rodon

RALEIGH, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Josh Heddinger out-dueled NC State’s Carlos Rodon and the Yellow Jackets pulled out a 1-0 win over the Wolfpack Friday night at Dail Park in the opener of an ACC series in Raleigh, N.C.

Matt Gonzalez had three of the six hits and his RBI single in the sixth inning was the game’s only run for the Yellow Jackets (26-17, 12-10), who snapped a five-game skid in the series to NC State. The Wolfpack slipped to 22-19, 7-15.

Heddinger tossed a two-hit shutout over his season-long 7.1 innings on the mound with no walks and four strikeouts. Fellow Buford High School alum Sam Clay recorded the final five outs with three strikeouts to slam the door on the Pack and record his fourth save. Heddinger upped his record to 3-2.

Wetzler Becomes All-Time Winningest OSU Pitcher

ORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State senior left-hander Ben Wetzler set the school record for career wins on Friday night as the Beavers edged Oregon 3-1 at Goss Stadium in the opener of their Pac-12 Conference Civil War series.

Wetzler (7-1) allowed one run and five hits over 8 1/3 innings to record his 31st career victory; he had shared the record with Ken Noble, who won 30 games between 1975 and 1978. Wetzler struck out seven and walked one to improve to 16-2 all-time at Goss Stadium.

Gamecocks Offense Explodes Against SEC West Leading Alabama

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Eighth-ranked South Carolina pounded out 10 hits en route to a 9-3 victory over eight-ranked Alabama on Friday night at Carolina Stadium. This is the fifth-straight game that the Gamecocks have tallied 10 or more hits. South Carolina improves to 33-10 on the year and 11-8 in SEC play while the loss drops Alabama to 28-14 and 12-7 in the league.

Grayson Greiner and Tanner Englishboth went 3-for-4 with two RBI whileGene Cone finished the game 1-for-1 with a three-run triple. Mikey White, Georgie Salem, Ben Moore and Kyle Overstreet all had two hits apiece to lead Alabama at the plate.

French, Hollingsworth Blank Oklahoma State

AUSTIN, Texas — Parker French and Chad Hollingsworth combined to pitch a two-hit shutout, Zane Gurwitz went 3-for-4 at the plate, and No. 10/16 Texas defeated No. 21/14 Oklahoma State 3-0 Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

 Texas made up ground in the Big 12 race with the win, improving to 32-11 overall and 10-6 in the league – just a game behind the first-place Cowboys, who fell to 29-13 overall and 11-5 in the conference.

Diaz Dominates in Hurricanes Road Win

CLEMSON, S.C. — Led by another dominant performance on the road from junior lefthander Chris Diaz, No. 11 Miami captured a 5-2 victory over No. 20 Clemson in game one of the team’s series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Diaz tossed 7.2 strong innings, allowing just two unearned runs with five strikeouts. He surrendered just four hits on the night, matching his win total from last season and improving his personal record to a perfect 7-0 this spring. The team-leading seventh home run of the season from freshman Zack Collins slugger widened a 3-2 game to a 5-2 lead in the ninth, where freshman Bryan Garcia shut down the Tigers and recorded his 12th save.
