caputo_journalHello College Baseball Fans,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter Sunday! Easter is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, and ironically our team experienced something quite similar this past Sunday. In the first two games of the series against George Mason this past weekend, our offense ceased to put up any runs and our bats were cold. In Sundayʼs game however, we scored seven runs on 14 hits – it seemed that our bats had risen from the dead. Our pitching staff has been battling all year and giving us a bunch of quality innings so it was nice to finally put some runs up for them to work with!

It was definitely a team effort. Sophomore Steve Moyers, who has been excellent on the year started the game off strong then handed the ball over to senior Tyler Bowditch, who threw four solid innings. Freshman RJ Warnock, who came in and shut down the tough George Mason lineup in the ninth, came out with the win.

On the offensive side of things, freshman Tommy Buonopane, who made his first career start, sparked the offense early by flying around the bases. Redshirt freshman Mike Corin was hot all weekend, coming up with clutch two-out hits and getting on base. Other offensive highlights include sophomore Connor Foreman and junior Mike Sherburne, both of whom contributed to the win with timely hitting.

Everyone on the team added to the win, but no one gets as much credit as our senior captain, Pat Quinn. Pat, who hadnʼt been able to play the past few games due to a hand injury, came back with 3 hits on the day, one of them being the game winner. “Quinny” came up with no one on base and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. He took a hack at a 2-1 change up which sailed over the right field wall. That victory lap never seemed so sweet as our guys stormed the plate to meet Quinny and walk-off with the win.

Itʼs been a tough couple of weeks for us and weʼve been struggling a little bit, but this is a great opportunity to see what a team is made of. You never know what can happen on a day-to-day basis, and thatʼs the beauty of baseball. The only thing that you can control is your work ethic and the attitude you bring to the park everyday – and I know that our guys are capable of excelling in both of these aspects of the game. Itʼll be a long road back for a chance to make playoffs, but with an effort like the one we displayed on Sunday, the postseason definitely isnʼt out of the picture.

Until Next Time,
Tim Caputo
