Another potential top-round talent was also on display at Oregon over the weekend, in Cal State Fullerton’s J.D. Davis.
A 2011 fifth-round pick by Tampa Bay, Davis chose instead to enroll at Cal State Fullerton.
As a freshman, Davis saw time both on the mound and at designated hitter.
On the mound, Davis had a 3.52 ERA with three walks and nine strikeouts in 23 innings.
Offensively, Davis put up a team-best four homeruns and had twenty RBI.
Davis saw his numbers jump dramatically in his sophomore season, as he batted .318 with 11 doubles. He hit four homeruns and had 50 RBI.
Most of his starts (52) came as the designated hitter, but once again Davis saw time on the mound compiling a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings. He made 16 appearances, three of which were starts.
During his sophomore summer, Davis played in the Cape Cod League for the Chatham Anglers. He was named to the 2013 Cape Cod All-League Team, after putting up a .309 batting average with six homeruns and 29 RBI.
Davis time on the mound was limited, as he only managed five appearances all in relief. He had a 0.00 ERA in four and 2/3 innings while recording two saves.
So far this season, Davis is batting .325 with three homers and nine RBI through ten games. He has struck out eleven times, but the junior has also walked eight times resulting in a .440 on-base percentage while primarily playing first base.
Although early in the year, Davis has only made one appearance on the mound. He recorded a win in an inning of relief, where he only faced two batters.
In the series against Oregon, Davis went 4-10 with four RBI.
In the win on Friday, Davis’ highlight came in the top of the sixth inning, after a double by Matt Chapman put runners on second and third with two outs. Davis stayed back and laced a breaking ball to right, picking up two RBI.
His other key moment came on Sunday when he hit a go-ahead solo homer in the top of the seventh inning.He then gave the Titans a cushion with a sac-fly in the ninth.
Davis is regarded as a good hitter with above average power. He profiles best at first base, although he has a fastball that has reached 94 mph.
In a time where right-handed power in the MLB seems to be fading, Cal State Fullerton has two potential top 50 draft eligible prospects on their roster.
