Sunday Roundup for March 2nd

On a weekend full of top 25 showdowns, Cal State Fullerton made sure they stood out. Going to Eugene, OR to face an 8-0 Ducks team was a tall task but the Titans not only won the series but swept Oregon in their own ballpark, an incredible feat to say the least. Fullerton struggled a bit in the first two weeks of the season coming into the series at 4-3 overall, but showed why the club had such high expectations and a pre-season #1 ranking. Pitching dominated for the Titans throughout the series as they took games 9-2, 3-2, and 5-4 today to finish off the sweep.

South Carolina and Clemson was another of the more notable series going on in college baseball this weekend, and it was more of the same in the Palmetto state. After winning the first two in the series (played at three different ballparks in three days), it looked like Clemson was finally going to break through and grab a game, but South Carolina had other ideas. Trailing 3-1 in the 9th with 2 outs, the Gamecocks rallied for four runs and came back to win 5-3 in dramatic fashion to go to 10-0 and sweep their hated rivals. In all likelihood it won’t be the last time these two square off this season, however, because we all know how the NCAA enjoys factoring in location when regionals come around.

Our stunner of the day saw Yale pull off a massive upset in Baton Rouge, 8-7, handing LSU just their second loss of the season. Even more impressive, the Bulldogs were down by as much as 6-0 in the 4th inning. This all comes after losing their season opener on Friday against LSU 19-0, but Yale continued to battle and tied the game 7-7 in the 7th before plating the game winning run in the 8th on a historical day for their baseball program.

Looking around the SEC it was a tough weekend for a handful of teams: Florida, Alabama, Texas A&M and Arkansas all lost series, but on the other hand a different group of teams impressed. Tennessee improved upon their best start in school history sweeping Quinnipiac to go to 10-0 overall, Ole Miss is quietly 11-1 coming off a sweep of a solid UCF team, and Kentucky swept Eastern Michigan to run their record to 9-2. Translation: the league looks rich with talent and is as deep as it has ever been. It should be an extremely tough year to predict outside of a few teams toward the bottom of the conference.
