Southern Preview Weekend of February 28 – March 2

The Appalachian State Mountaineers head to Cary, North Carolina this weekend for the Irish Classic. The 0-8 Mountaineers first face the Youngstown State Penguins on Friday at 1:00pm. The Penguins are 0-5 on the season. The Classic continues for the Mountaineers on Saturday at 4:00pm against the 1-5-1 Michigan Wolverines. The weekend concludes when App State plays the 3-4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on NTC Field 2 at 11:00am.

The Citadel Bulldogs host the Nebraska Cornhuskers this weekend in Charleston. The Cornhuskers will be welcomed by the Bulldogs to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Friday at 5:00pm. The Bulldogs are 4-5 on the season, where the Cornhuskers are  4-3. The weekend continues on Saturday at noon and comes to an end Sunday at the same time. These meetings are sure to be lively, as the last time the two clubs met was in 2006 when the Bulldogs knocked off the then #3 Huskers.

The Davidson College Wildcats welcome the University of Miami of Ohio Redhawks this weekend to Wilson Field. The Wildcats come into the series with a record of 2-3 and the Redhawks come to Davidson with a record of 1-5. This is the second time the two ball clubs have met with Davidson having an all-time lead of 2-0. The series begins Friday evening at 6:00pm. The battle between these historic programs continues Saturday and Sunday at 2:00pm. This clash pits teams that have been running for 102 and 100 years for Davidson and Miami, respectively, against one another.

Elon University hosts the Elon Invitational this weekend at Latham Park. The schools participating include Gardner-Webb University, High Point University, and Saint Joseph’s University. The Elon Phoenix first face off against the Saint Joseph’s Hawks Friday at 4:00pm. The Phoenix enter the game with a 5-1 record and look to capitalize off of this winning record over a 1-2 Saint Joseph’s squad, whom they have beaten in each of their previous four meetings. The series continues for the Phoenix Saturday at 12:30pm against the 5-4 High Point Panthers. Elon holds a 122-81 all-time advantage over High Point, a team they have faced more than any other, at 203. The Invitational comes to an end on Sunday with the Phoenix play the 3-5 Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs. The Phoenix and Bulldogs conclude the matchup of teams with storied histories with their 57th contest, where Elon currently leads 37-19. 

The Furman University Paladins are to take the field in the Stetson Invitational at Melching Field this weekend in DeLand, Florida. The three game series will place the Paladins against the Maine Black Bears, the Stetson Hatters, and the Iowa Hawkeyes, respectively. The 3-5 Paladins and 1-5 Black Bears will play on Friday at 1:00pm for the second time in school history, where the Paladins are hoping that they will fare better than the last meeting where they fell 13-6 to the Black Bears. Furman continues their weekend against Stetson on Saturday night at 7:00pm. The Paladins and the Hatters have met twenty times previous to the invitational. Furman will conclude the series in DeLand by playing Iowa on Sunday at 10:00am. This is the first time the Paladins and Hawkeyes have met in baseball.

The Georgia Southern Eagles host Ohio University and Southern Illinois Edwardsville at Clements Stadium this weekend. The Eagles start and end the weekend by playing the Ohio Bobcats; first on Friday at 6:00pm and to end on Sunday at 5:00pm. In between facing off against the Bobcats, the Eagles face the Southern Illinois Edwardsville Cougars. The Eagles are looking to continue their strong start to the season, at 7-1, with wins over struggling Ohio (2-4) and SIUE (1-6) teams.

The Samford University Bulldogs are welcoming the Butler Bulldogs and Purdue Boilermakers this weekend for a series in Birmingham. The 3-4 Samford Bulldogs will play two games against the 1-4 Bulldogs of Butler. These games will take place on Friday at evening at 6:00pm and Sunday at noon. Butler will meet Purdue on the diamond in between the two games between the Bulldogs, at 10:30am on Saturday morning. The Boilermakers come to Joe Lee Griffin Field for the third season since 2007. Samford hopes to turn their season around over .500 by beating a 1-4 Butler team and a Samford club that currently sits at 0-6.

The University of North Carolina Greensboro Spartans are hosting Georgetown University Hoyas this weekend for a three game stand. The Spartans sit at a 2-5 record when the Hoyas come to town with a 3-3 record. The series begins Friday at 4:00pm. The home stand for the Spartans continues on Saturday at 2:00pm. UNCG hopes to finish strong Sunday at 1:00pm against Georgetown heading into a game Tuesday versus Ohio University.

Western Carolina University plays host to LaSalle University this weekend at Childress Field at Hennon Stadium. The Western Carolina Catamounts comes into the weekend with a 4-2 record, and the LaSalle Explorers sit at 1-6. The Catamounts and Explorers dual on the diamond for the first time this weekend on Friday afternoon at 4:00pm. The series continues on Saturday at 2:00pm and concludes on Sunday at 1:00pm. Western Carolina is seeking to gain momentum going into their Tuesday game against in state ACC powerhouse Clemson.

The Wofford Terriers host the Longwood Lancers in Spartanburg this weekend. The Terriers enter Friday’s game, which begins at 5:00pm, with a record of 5-3, while the Lancers enter the weekend series with a 3-5 record. The Terriers hope to continue their winning ways from last weekend and carry that into this weekend. The series continues Saturday at 2:00pm and concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm.
