Following up Opening Day 2014, Saturday also saw a number of upsets across college baseball. Early season surprises really aren’t anything new as teams are shaking off the rust of the new season, incorporating plenty of new players and dealing with the cold conditions that are always present in February.

But it’s still worth noting some of the more surprising results from the diamond today, and you can look no further than #1 Cal State Fullerton being stunned by Washington State in 11 innings. Tied 7-7 in the top of the 11th, Jason Monda singled and drove in 2 to give the Cougars the 9-7 lead as they held on to secure their first win of 2014. The rubber game is set for Sunday.

7th ranked Indiana lost both games of a double-dip to Texas Tech, 10-5 and 6-2. The Red Raiders were led by junior shortstop Tim Proudfoot who went a combined 5-8 in the doubleheader with 3 RBI. Outfielder Tyler Neslony also added a grand slam in game one.

The ACC saw multiple upsets for the second day in a row, as Maine defeated Miami 3-1. After being delayed a day to begin their seasons, College of Charleston knocked off North Carolina 7-4 and Radford got a huge 3-1 win over Georgia Tech. Maryland also bounced back and defeated Florida 9-7.

Rice continued their impressive play this weekend with a 5-1 win at Stanford. The Owls shut down the Cardinal bats behind the arm of Blake Fox who threw up 6 shutout frames.

Cal-Poly also picked up a huge series win beating Kansas State 5-2. The Mustangs have looked great early on this season behind a very impressive pitching staff that has made a solid K-State lineup look pedestrian. Look out for these guys.

Team of the day: Texas Tech

What a day for the Red Raiders. Sweeping a doubleheader from a top ten opponent with the potential to take three of four with a win on Sunday would be a dream start to the season.

Honorable mention: The Citadel

The Bulldogs have to be thrilled with their play so far starting off 2014 with a 2-0 record with wins over Virginia Tech and Louisville, both of whom were in the postseason last year.
