College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!
Number 2 on our countdown is East Carolina junior Jeff Hoffman. The 6’4 right-handed pitcher from Latham, New York spent his summer playing for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in the prestigious Cape Cod League.Â
During his freshman season in 2012, Â Hoffman saw action in 19 games for the Pirates, 10 of which he started. He posted a record of 3-2 with an ERA of 3.67 in 73.2 innings pitched, holding opponents to a .224 batting average. Hoffman had a fantastic summer with the Harbor Hawks where he went 2-1 posting an ERA of 2.40, with 30 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched. His success earned him a spot on the West team of the 2012 Cape Cod League All Star Game where he pitched a scoreless inning. Hoffman was the only freshman to pitch in the All Star Game.
His sophomore season saw him go 6-7 in 15 starts with a 3.20 ERA. He led Pirates in quality starts (11), innings pitched (109.2) and strikeouts (84) while showing excellent control.
From a scouting perspective, Hoffman’s success in the Cape spoke volumes. His repertoire includes a fastball that sits at about 96 along with two more strong pitches in his curve and change up.
