2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 40. Skyler Ewing (Rice)

SkylerEwingRiceWe continue the countdown today at number 40 with Rice junior Skyler Ewing. The Arlington, Texas native attended Arlington High School where he was a three year letter winner. As a senior, he batted .443 with 13 home runs and 46 RBI in the team’s 40 games while going 7-3 on the mound with a 3.26 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 67 innings of work. He was named the 2011 District 4-5A Utility Player of the Year among many other honors. 

As a freshman, he saw limited action appearing in only nine games (two starts) with a batting average of .182 and two RBI. He played the summer in the Northwoods League with the Wisconsin Woodchucks where he helped lead the team to a 26-9 record and South Division title. He played in 28 games with the Woodchucks a batting average of .347 including six homers and 22 RBI. 

In 2013, Ewing became an everyday player with the Owls appearing in 57 games (47 starts) while hitting .226 with four homers and 23 RBI. Ewing played in the summer of 2013 with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks where he was named an All-Star with a season that saw him hitting .287 with four homers and 20 RBI.

Wow, can’t believe you including Ewing on your list, but I certainly agree he is primed for a breakout, all-american caliber season. He came on strong the latter half of last season, had an outstanding Summer in the Cape, and continued to be a hitting machine (with power) throughout Fall Ball. Lost in your analysis, he’s an exceptional defensive 1B and C, an outstanding bunter, and has exhibited excellent plate discipline.
I’m not sure he deserves to be this high up your list (ahead of Bolt, Blandino and others), but he belongs on this list. I hope you’re not overlooking Rice’s Zech Lemond (who should be amongst the top 5 closers entering the college season) or Jordan Stephens (who finished last season as strong as any starting pitcher in the country).
