AlexRealNewMexicoWe continue our countdown today at number 80 with New Mexico catcher/first baseman Alex Real. In his sophomore season with the Lobo’s, Real stepped up his game appearing in 55 games hitting .317 with 18 doubles, 8 home runs and 36 RBI. The 6’1, 200 pounder from Anthem, Arizona showed great pop during the 2013 season and was named All-Mountain West second team. Real’s versatility on the field made head coach Ray Birmingham’s job easy as the Lobos went 21-4 with him starting at DH and 26-6 with him batting fifth in the order. Additionally he made eight starts at catcher and 22 at first base.

Real was named the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association 5A Div-II Player of the Year while attending Boulder Creek High School. Offensively he hit .402 at the plate as 29 of his team high 45 hits went for extra bases as the slugger led the team in both doubles (15) and home runs (14). Real also had a team high 48 RBI, as well as a team-high 14 stolen bases, in 14 attempts.

During the 2013 summer, Real spent his time in the West Coast League with the Victoria Harbour Cats. His .339 BA was good for first on the team as well as his 27 RBI. Real returns to the Lobo’s for the 2014 season and looks to continue his success on the field.
