College Baseball Daily kicks off our countdown to the start of the 2014 College Baseball season by checking in on the top 100 players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today at number 87 with Grand Canyon University pitcher Jorge Perez. Last season, Perez went 8-4 with a 2.86 ERA in 16 games with 15 starts for the Antelopes, collecting three complete games. Perez was named to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship All-Tournament Team after allowing just 2 earned runs in 12 innings, including a complete-game victory over Sonoma State and his first career save in the championship-clinching win over Chico State. He also tossed a complete game versus Coker College in GCU’s 10-2 win at the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships.

The Downey, Cali. native has spent the last two summers with the Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League and has showed signs of big league potential. With command of a deep repertoire, Perez was one of the most polished pitchers in the WCL. Perez, who posted a 1.25 ERA in 36 innings this summer, averaged only one walk per nine innings and posted a 6-1 strikeout-walk ratio, as he commands the ball to either side of the plate down in the zone. His performance during the 2013 summer season landed him #2 on the Baseball America top ten WCL prospects list.

Perez returns to the ‘Lopes for his junior season as he looks to continue his success on and off the field as the school makes the transition to the Division 1 level and will be plain gin the WAC.
