Hofstra Adds Three to Coaching Staff

JohnRussoHofstraHempstead, NY – Hofstra University Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway today announced the appointments of Rob Cafiero, Kevin Ferrari and Adam Janowski to volunteer coaching positions in the Hofstra Athletics Department.

Cafiero will serve as an assistant baseball coach, Ferrari a women’s soccer assistant and Janowski a men’s soccer assistant.

Cafiero, a former collegiate standout at Villanova and seven-year professional baseball player, comes to Hofstra after four years as an assistant coach at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, NY.

The starting first baseman for four years (1999-2002) at Villanova, Cafiero earned third team All-America honors fromBaseball America and Freshman All-America accolades from Louisville Slugger in 1999. A Big East All-Rookie Team selection, Cafiero led the conference with 72 RBIs as a freshman. He would also earn All-Big East honors following his senior season and graduated as the Wildcats’ all-time leader in RBIs (196), doubles (61) and games played (202).

Drafted in the 32nd round by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2002, Cafiero went on to play seven years of professional baseball with Class-A Batavia and then the Pennsylvania Road Warriors and Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.

Cafiero started his coaching career as the bench coach for the Ducks in 2008 and as manager for the 2009 Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League champion Westhampton Aviators. Since 2010 he has served as the manager of the Southampton Breakers in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League. He guided the Breakers to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons and to their first league title in 2012.

A native of Massapequa Park, NY, Cafiero also owns and operates Hitter’s Club, an indoor baseball/softball facility in Farmingdale, New York, where he trains more than 1,000 aspiring youth athletes.

Ferrari, a senior lending manager at Citibank, was a four-year standout goalkeeper for the University of Scranton from 1983-86, where he still holds the record for lowest career goals-against-average at 0.632 and is tied for the program’s all-time lead with 42 shutouts. His 400 career saves ranks third all time. Ferrari helped Scranton qualify for four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, including a Final Four showing in 1983.

Ferrari has worked as both as an assistant coach and a goalkeeping instructor at the high school and college levels, working with Abington Heights High School in Pennsylvania and the varsity programs at both Mepham High School and Massapequa High School on Long Island. He also served as the goalkeepers coaches at Queens College.

Ferrari holds an “A” coaching license from the NSCAA. He earned a bachelor’s degree in both accounting and philosophy from Scranton.

Janowski moved into a coaching position after spending five seasons as a student-athlete with the Pride and will coach the team’s goalkeepers. The Coram, NY, native compiled an 8-6-3 record for Hofstra in a career that spanned 2008-12, with all eight victories coming in his final season.

After an injury to Hofstra’s starting keeper in 2012, Janowski stepped up and recorded five shutouts and 81 saves. His efforts in net led the Pride to the CAA Tournament championship game, where the Pride battled before falling in double overtime to Northeastern.

Janowski’s previous coaching experience includes a stint as a volunteer coach with Special Olympics of New York. A two-time Hofstra graduate, Janowski holds an undergraduate degree in accounting and a master’s in taxation from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. He has interned for Sbarro’s tax department and Merrill Lynch’s wealth management sector.
