College Baseball Daily kicks off our countdown to the start of the 2014 College Baseball season by checking in on the top 100 players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today at number 89 with LSU’s third baseman Christian Ibarra. Before transferring to LSU for his junior season, Ibarra was a shortstop at Rio Hondo and earned All-State and All-Pacific Division Team recognition last season after batting .396 with 20 doubles, 6 HR, 40 runs and 50 RBIs in 45 games. The Marauders were 40-5 and made it to the California Final Four, the junior-college equivalent of a Super Regional.
In his first season with the Tigers, Ibarra was probably one of the biggest surprise additions to the 2013 team. He was a consistent threat at the plate and was as sure-handed as they come defensively; in 66 games, Ibarra was able to post a .305 BA with 68 hits and 39 RBI. His efforts got him selected in the 32nd round of the 2013 MLB draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The La Puente, CA native spent his summer filling in at shortstop for the Lakeshore Chinooks in the Northwoods League. Ibarra is majoring in sports administration at LSU and returns to play the hot corner for the Tigers for his senior season.
