LOS ANGELES — Joey Wagman pitched eight strong innings, allowing only one hit after the fourth inning to pick up his school record 13th win of the season as Cal Poly defeated San Diego (35-24) by a 9-2 score Friday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The Mustangs (40-17) took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning after Wagman escaped a two-on, no-out jam in the top half of the inning. After a nine-pitch sixth inning from Wagman, the offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by two-run singles from Brian Mundell and Jimmy Allen.

Allen finished with four hits and two RBI while Mundell was 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI. Cal Poly held San Diego slugger Kris Bryant hitless and handed freshman PJ Conlon (9-1) his first collegiate loss.

UCLA 5, San Diego State 3

LOS ANGELES — Adam Plutko pitched his best in big spots, leading UCLA to a 5-3 win over San Diego State Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Plutko allowed only one earned run in seven innings as he became the winningest postseason pitcher in UCLA history, collecting his fifth NCAA Tournament victory.

The Bruins (40-17)  fell behind early, but tied the score and then put together a three-run fourth inning, in which they had only one base hit out of the infield. UCLA was fortunate to get a pair of infield singles, including a Pat Valaika cue ball that started foul down the first base line before curving back and bouncing off the base away from the San Diego State fielders. Pat Gallagher later collected one of his three hits, knocking a two-run single just past the diving glove of the first baseman.

Greg Allen doubled home a run for San Diego State (31-30) against closer David Berg in the ninth inning. The Aztecs brought the game-tying run to the plate, but Berg struck out the side to earn his 19th save of the season.

Allen finished with three hits, including two for extra bases. Jake Romanski homered and doubled while Tyler France also had two hits, including a double. Six of San Diego State’s nine hits went for extra bases, but the Aztecs could never string them together.
