D-2 Northeast Regional: Day Three

Franklin Pierce survives

Manchester, NH— (6)Franklin Pierce eliminated (5)Pace with their 8-1 win in the first game of day three at the D-2 NE Regional. Kevin McGowan had one of the best performances of the weekend on the mound throwing 120 pitches while only giving up nine hits, and one run through nine innings. Matthew O’Herron (4 for 4) had a great day for the Ravens scoring twice and picking up one RBI. Dan Kemp (1 for 3), and Matt Walsh (1 for 4) each scored once with Kemp driving in two runs and Walsh picking up an RBI as well.

Neil Pezzullo started the game on the mound for the Setters giving up two hits and four runs through two and two thirds innings before Josh Garran came in only to give up six hits and three runs through his three innings of play. Robert Rizzitelli relieved Garran allowing two hits and one run through one and one third innings with Josh Grant relieving him to finish the game for the Setters on the mound, giving up one hit and no runs in the ninth inning. Brandon Martineson (3 for 4), and Charlie Galasso (2 for 4) swung the bat well for the Setters with Martineson picking up an RBI, and Galasso scoring Pace’s only run in the eighth inning.

With this win the Ravens are set to face (4)Southern New Hampshire University in the third game of day three at 7:00pm

Wilmington advances

(1)Wilmington (Del.) eliminated (3)University of New Haven with a 11-0 win in game two on day three of the D-2 NE Regional. Frank Samluk started on the hill for the Wildcats throwing 112 pitches earning 12 strikeouts, and giving up only three hits for no runs through seven innings before Tyler Fries came in to pitch the eighth inning giving up no hit or runs. Nick Marics finished the game on the mound for Wilmington earning one strikeout while not giving up any hits or runs in the ninth. The Wildcats had a great day hitting with Brandon Payne (3 for 5) scoring once, Sam Giones (2 for 3) scoring twice, and Matt Lopes (2 for 4) scoring three times. Jordan Johnson (3 for 4) also had a good day scoring twice with Payne, Giones, and Lopes all picking up two RBIs.

John Melville was on the mound to start for the Chargers giving up ten hits, for six runs through four and two thirds innings when he was relieved by Frank Vilacha who gave up two hits and five runs in his one and one third innings. Jason Lewicki entered the game in the seventh inning for New Haven giving up one hit without a run scoring. Taylor Candage finished the game for the Chargers giving up one hit and allowing no runs through the eighth and ninth innings. Hitting was a struggle for New Haven with Stephen Clout (1 for 4), Brendan O’Reilly (1 for 4), and Chris DeMorais (1 for 3) coming up with the only three hits of the game.

With this win the Wildcats are set to face the winner of game 8 ((4)Southern New Hampshire University vs. (6)Franklin Pierce) on day four at 12:00pm if two teams remain after day three. If there are three teams remaining after day three then the Wildcats will face the loser of game 8 in an elimination game at 12:00pm.

Franklin Pierce wins a nail biter

Vladimir Camacho had a great day on the mound only giving up five hits and one run through eight innings as the (6)Franklin Pierce Ravens defeated (4)Southern New Hampshire University 3-2 in an incredible 13 inning battle. Joe Flynn pitched the ninth inning for the Ravens not giving up a run or hit before Doug Willey came in and pitched three and two thirds innings giving up two hits for one run. Trevor Graham finished the last third of the 13th inning not giving up a hit or run. Zach Mathieu (0 for 4) had a great day scoring all three of the Ravens runs with Marty Dunlap (2 for 4) picking up two RBIs and Matt Walsh (1 for 3) picking up an RBI as well.

Derrick Sylvester was great on the mound for the Penmen throwing 125 pitches and only allowing six hits and one run through his nine innings of play. Joe McCarthy came in and gave up two hits for one run through three innings before Tyler Gauthier came in to pitch the 13th inning but gave up two hits and the game winning run. Matt Boulter (0 for 5) and Riley Palmer (0 for 4) each picked up one RBI with Kyle McGinnity (0 for 0) and Bryan Toland (1 for 3) each scoring a run.

After day three the fourth and final day of games is set with (1)Wilmington (Del.) taking on (4)Southern New Hampshire University in an elimination game at 12:00pm. The winner of that game will face (6)Franklin Pierce in the championship game at 4:00pm.
