KevinZiomekFeaturedVandyVanderbilt lefthander Kevin Ziomek was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week.

On Friday night, against No. 11 ranked Oregon, Ziomek struck out 13 hitters while only allowing two hits. He walked one in finishing off his second consecutive complete game.

In his back-to-back complete games, Ziomek has struck out a total of 28 batters. He has allowed just one run on three hits over that span.

The lefty is the first Vanderbilt pitcher to receive the award in consecutive weeks since Sonny Gray accomplished the feat in 2010.

Ziomek sits at 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA through four starts. He has struck out 46 in 31 innings.

The junior lefthander sits at 6’3 and weighs 200 pounds. Ziomek appears wiry and thin, but his physical frame suggests supporting future muscle and weight will not be a problem.

On the mound, Ziomek approaches the hill with confidence and a plan. In the game against Oregon, Ziomek averaged around three seconds per pitch. He received the ball and was instantly ready to go.

Ziomek’s delivery is clean and smooth. He throws from a 3/4 arm angle and constantly repeats his motion without error.

His arsenal consist of a fastball that ranges anywhere between 91 mph to 93 mph, a curveball that consistently found its speed between 75 mph to 77 mph, and a changeup that was clocked in the range of 85 mph to 87 mph during the game against Oregon.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ziomek gave up a homerun to Ducks first baseman Ryon Healy. He then returned to the mound and struck out Ducks cleanup hitter Brett Thomas on a 90 mph inside fastball. Ziomek then struck out the next Ducks hitter on another well-placed 90 mph fastball.

From there on out, Ziomek was in total control.
