College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2013 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!
Number 17 on our Top 100 Countdown is Arkansas’s Dominic Ficociello. The 6’4 infielder from Fullerton, California was selected in the 23rd round by the Detroit Tigers in the 2010 MLB Draft.Â
During his freshman season, Ficociello batted a team high .335 during his 61 appearances for the Razorbacks. Ficociello also had a team-high 50 RBI, 15 doubles and four homeruns. As a sophomore, Ficociello batted .290 with 41 RBI, 45 runs, 15 doubles and six homeruns.
His success as a Razorback earned him a variety of awards including Freshman All-American honors in addition to being named to the SEC All-Freshman and All-Defensive Teams in 2011. He was also selected to play on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team during the summer of 2011. Over the summer of 2012, Ficociello played for the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
From a scouting perspective, Ficociello possesses a lot of great qualities for a hitter. He still has room to fill out his frame a bit more, but Ficociello has fantastic bat speed and a very smooth swing. His approach at the plate is also very advanced for a collegiate hitter. Defensively, he is a fantastic first baseman with some scouts projecting him at third due to his excellent defensive abilities. With one of the best swings in college baseball, Ficociello is one of the top players to watch for in 2013.
