College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2013 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!
Number 16 on our Top 100 Countdown is Kentucky’s Austin Cousino. The 5’10 outfielder from Dublin, Ohio was the 2012 SEC Freshman of the Year.
Cousino had a fantastic break out season at Kentucky in 2012. He started in 62 games for the Wildcats where he led the Wildcats with a batting average of .319. He also had 61 runs, 41 RBI, 20 doubles, two triples and nine home runs.
His success earned him a variety of awards including being named to the SEC All-Defensive Team and SEC All-Freshman Team, as well as being named the 2012 SEC Freshman of the Year and receiving First Team Freshman All-American honors as well as being named to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
From a scouting perspective, Cousino has jumped onto the radar after his breakout 2012 season. In addition to his success at the plate, Cousino also showed his athleticism at centerfield. He has great instincts, which paired with his athleticism allowed him to excel defensively as well. However at the plate, Cousino shows composure that is rarely seen in freshmen. It was seen in SEC play during the 2012 season as well as with Team USA over the summer of 2012. As one of the top sophomores in the country entering the 2013 season, Cousino is also one of the top players to watch for in 2013.
