College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2013 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!
Number 13 on our Top 100 Countdown is UCLA’s Adam Plutko. The 6’3 right-handed pitcher from Glendora, California was selected in the 6th round by the Houston Astros in the 2010 MLB Draft.Â
During his freshman season, Plutko went 7-4 in 16 appearances posting an ERA of 2.01. In his 107.2 innings pitched, he struck out 92 while walking just 24 and holding opposition to a batting average of just .193. His success earned him All-Pac-10 and Freshman All-American honors.
His success continued into his sophomore season as he went 12-3 in eighteen starts with an ERA of 2.48. In his 119.2 innings, he struck out 99 and walked 47.
He earned All-Pac-12 honors, second-team ABCA All-West Region honors, second-team All-American honors from Perfect Game and third-team All-American honors from Baseball America. Over the summer of 2012, Plutko pitched on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, where he posted an ERA of 2.63 with a WHIP of 1.02.
From a scouting perspective, Plutko is one of the top collegiate pitchers entering the 2013 MLB Draft. His repertoire primarily includes a fastball that sits in the low 90s, a slider sitting between 77-81, a changeup that sits between 79-83, and occasionally a curveball that typically ranges from 73-78. Plutko has dominated the Pac-12 as a starting pitcher and is projected to go as early as late first round in the 2013 MLB Draft. As he returns as the Friday night starter for UCLA, Plutko is one of the top players to watch for in 2013.
