College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2013 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!
Number 29 on our Top 100 Countdown is Connecticut’s LJ Mazzilli. The 6’1 infielder from Greenwich, Connecticut was selected in the ninth round by the Minnesota Twins in the 2012 MLB draft.Â
During his freshman season in 2010, Mazzilli appeared in 36 games for the Huskies where he posted a batting average of .312 with an on base percentage of .373 and a slugging percentage of .548. He was named to the Norwich Regional All-Tournament Team and spent the summer following the 2010 season playing for the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod League.
In 2011, Mazzilli started in 65 games for Connecticut where he batted .338 with 32 RBI and 29 doubles. He earned a variety of honors including being named All-Big East Second Team, NEIBA Second-Team All-Star, and being selected as an alternate for the 2011 USA Baseball Collegiate national Team. Following the 2011 season, Mazzilli returned to Cape Cod where he spent the summer with the Gatemen.
During his junior season in 2012, Mazzilli made 58 starts as he led the Huskies with a .339 batting average, 43 runs, 38 RBI, 19 double and nine home runs. He was a First-Team All-Big East selection as well as a NEIBA All-Star. He was selected in the ninth round by the Twins in the 2012 MLB draft, but elected to return to Connecticut for his senior season. He spent the tail end of summer with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League.
From a scouting perspective, the consistency that Mazzilli demonstrates at the plate is a fantastic attribute. His swing is short and compact and translates well to a wood bat. Mazzilli also is a quick player who isn’t afraid to steal; however his selling point is really his bat. As he has demonstrated his consistency as a solid player for the Huskies throughout his career so far, 2013 shouldn’t be anything else for Mazzilli, which makes him one of the top players to watch for in the 2013 season.
