A close vote had Manhattan top the poll with 74 points followed by Canisius College with 72. Rider University was picked third with 59 points, while Marist College was fourth with 57. Fairfield University finished with 48 points, followed by Siena College (31), Niagara University (29), Saint Peter’s University (18), and Iona College (17).
Niagara redshirt-senior first baseman Ryan McCauley was voted the 2013 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. McCauley, a native of Urbandale, Iowa was second in the league last year with a .362 batting average. His 12 home runs, 20 doubles, 51 RBIs were the best in the league. McCauley also had 67 hits and 125 total bases last year.
Manhattan’s Ramon Ortega was unanimously selected to the Preseason All-MAAC Team as catcher along with Ryan Plourde from Fairfield University for his position in outfield. Manhattan’s Nick Camastro is the second baseman, while Marist’s Zach Shank fills the shortstop position. Adam Wayman from Rider was named to the team at third base. Along with Plourde, the outfield features Siena’s duo of Mike Fish and John Rooney. Rider’s Ian Lindsay was chosen as the designated hitter, while Niagara’s Joel Klock takes the utility spot. Canisius’ Garrett Cortright was named to the team in the position of pitcher.
