JoeyPankakeUSCCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2013 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 48 on our Top 100 Countdown is South Carolina’s Joey Pankake. The 6’0 shortstop from Easley, South Carolina was a 42nd-round draft pick in 2011 by the Rangers.

As a freshman at South Carolina, Pankake appeared in 66 games including 62 starts for the Gamecocks, who finished second in the College World Series. He posted a batting average of .264 including 42 runs, 15 doubles and 27 RBI. His success earned him several honors including being named to the 2012 NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team and SEC All-Freshman Team.

From a scouting perspective Pankake is not only a prospect as an infielder, but also on the mound where he might see some time in 2013, as he has a fastball that touches in the 90s. Pankake is also a pure hitter who put up decent numbers as a freshman for the Gamecocks and he has a great arm and fantastic athleticism that really help him defensively. As a very versatile player, Pankake has a great opportunity to continue improving his draft stock during the remainder of his time at South Carolina, where he is one of the top players to watch for during the 2013 season.

I am so dissappointed that a Joey Pankake article would be written with no mention of him eating pancakes at IHOP on national pancake day.
