College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2013 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

Number 93 on our Top 100 Countdown is UCLA’s David Berg. The 6’0 Covina, California native entered the program as a walk-on, only to become one of the most dynamic freshmen of 2012.

During his freshman campaign, Berg was fantastic in relief for the Bruins, leading the Pac-12 with an ERA of just 1.46, holding opponents to just a .165 batting average and posting a walk/strikeout ratio of 17/63.  Berg’s consistency made him a bullpen staple for UCLA as he set a school and conference record of 50 appearances on the mound, just one appearance behind the NCAA Division I record.

Berg’s success earned him a plethora of awards including All Pac-12 Team, Freshman All-American honors from Baseball America and Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball and second-team All-American honors from Perfect Game USA & NCBWA.

In addition to his many awards, Berg was also honored with being named to Team USA. Over the summer he earned two saves while pitching for the Collegiate National Team, posting a 3.72 ERA.

From a scouting perspective, Berg is unconventional to say the least with his submarine style of pitching and a fastball that sits in the mid-80s…but it is hard to ignore that Berg continuously proves to be effective on the mound as he can rely on both his sinker and his slider to continuously strike out opponents. Berg’s ability to fool batter after batter makes him one of the most fascinating players in the country, putting him as one of the Top 100 players to watch for in the 2013 season.
