College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2013 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
Number 94 on our Top 100 Countdown is Southern Mississippi’s Mason Robbins. The 6’2 outfielder/left-handed pitcher from Leakesville, Mississippi was drafted in the 20th round by the Mets in 2011 and tabbed the Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2012.
In the 2012 season, Robbins posted a .330 batting average including 11 doubles and five triples. Also leading the team in total bases (101), Robbins developed into a key part of the Golden Eagles lineup despite being just a freshman.
Robbins’s fantastic freshman season earned him several awards in addition to being named the conference’s freshman of the year. These awards included being named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team and being named to Baseball America’s Second Team Freshman All-American.
The success that Robbins had during the 2012 season continued into the summer, where he played in the elite Cape Cod Baseball League for the Bourne Braves. He led the team in batting average (.316) and showed power at the plate with seven doubles and eight homeruns on the season. Robbins’s success for the Braves also earned him a spot in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League All Star Game.
Robbins has a phenomenal swing, a solid frame and a great arm defensively; all of which are clear attributes to his success. The talent that Robbins demonstrates in addition to his ability to produce consistently high numbers set him up for a very high chance of success in the upcoming 2013 season, making him one of the top 100 players in the country to watch for.
