WASHINGTON – Georgetown University Head Baseball Coach Pete Wilk announced the additions of Phil Disher as assistant coach and Jake Wald as a volunteer assistant for the program.

“It’s great to have both coaches on staff,” Wilk said. “Both Phil and Jake come in with great experiences from their collegiate and professional experiences and I think our players will have a great opportunity to learn from them.”

Disher comes to the Hilltop after spending two years as an assistant at Wofford College, where he worked with the hitters and catchers.

Disher was selected twice in the Major League Baseball Draft, first by the San Francisco Giants in the 45th round (2007) and then in the 15th round of the 2008 draft by the Houston Astros. During his first year of pro ball he was named the MVP of the New York-Penn League while with the Tri-City Valley Cats in Troy, N.Y. He finished playing professionally with the Houston Astros organization when he was forced to retire due to an injury.

Disher, a native of South Carolina, graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2007 with a degree in exercise science and a minor in coaching. During his four year career at USC, he was named All-Southeastern Conference during his junior and senior seasons (2006, 2007) and was a third team All-American selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as a senior. While his teams made several postseason appearances, he was named to two NCAA All-Regional teams as well as two All-SEC tournament teams while being named the MVP of the 2007 Virginia Regional.

Disher served as head coach of the Forest City Owls in the Coastal Plains Collegiate Summer League this past summer. The Owls were the first half division champions and Disher was elected as the head coach of the all-star team.

Wald joins Wilk and the Georgetown program after serving in a similar role at George Washington during the 2011-12 academic year.

A 2002 graduate of George Washington, Wald graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts in psychology. AT GW, he played under current Wake Forest Head Coach Tom Walter, a 1991 Georgetown graduate. He was a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Championship team selection and helped lead the Colonials to the 2002 conference championship.

Wald was selected in the 11th round of the 2002 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants. After seven years in the Giants system where he spent two seasons in AAA, Wald closed out his professional career in 2010 with the Arizona Diamondbacks AA team in Alabama.
