ATLANTA (Aug. 9) – Veteran collegiate baseball coach Edwin Thompson has been added to the Georgia State coaching staff as an assistant coach, head coach Greg Frady has announced.

Thompson, 32, comes to GSU after spending the past two years on the Duke University staff as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach. He served as the interim head coach this spring until a new Duke head coach was named.

“I am extremely excited to announce Edwin Thompson as our pitching coach at Georgia State,” said GSU head coach Greg Frady. “He brings experience from the Atlantic Coast Conference and a high level of competitiveness. He is a great recruiter, is great with the players, and I think he is going to make an immediate impact in moving our program forward.”

A native of Jay, Maine, Thompson had served two years as the head coach at Bates (Maine) College before going to Duke in 2010. At Bates, Thompson led the Bobcats to a 25-11 season, the best in the school’s 138-year history. Prior to that, he had served as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Maine at Farmington.

While at Duke, Bates served as recruiting coordinator and pitching coach. Bates coached several future pros at Duke including first-round pick Marcus Stroman, who was selected 22nd overall by the Toronto Blue Jays.

He earned his collegiate degree in business administration.

Thompson joins the staff of coach Frady that also includes another former head coach in Willie Stewart (UNC Asheville). Frady has built a solid Georgia State program that has a 193-152-1 mark (.558) over his six seasons, including the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament bid.
