ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – UCF head baseball coach Terry Rooney announced more changes to his coaching staff Wednesday afternoon after the addition of assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Kevin Schnall in June.
In the wake of former volunteer assistant coach Brandon Romans accepting a full-time assistant coaching job at Jacksonville State, director of baseball operations Alex Guerra will take over for the former UCF catcher while Rich Witten has been hired to handle all baseball operational duties.
Romans, who served on Rooney’s staff for three seasons, will coach the catchers and outfielders while also serving as the Gamecocks’ hitting coach recruiting coordinator. The move to Alabama will see Romans’ run in Orlando come to an end after he spent six total years in a UCF uniform with the first three as a player for the Knights.
After excelling in his role as director of operations, Guerra will once again don a baseball uniform in his first opportunity on a coaching staff. The native of New York arrived in Orlando last summer after spending three years at Radford. The utility infielder finished his career with the Highlanders boasting a .311 batting average.
Handling the day-to-day operations on Rooney’s staff will be Witten. The recent graduate of Coastal Carolina becomes the second Chanticleer to arrive in Orlando after Schnall made his way south earlier this summer.
Witten recently finished his decorated career in Conway, S.C., after earning NCAA Columbia Regional All-Tournament honors as well as a spot on the All-Big South First Team. The utility infielder wrapped up his four-year stint with a .316 batting average including 17 home runs and 158 RBI. The Danville, Ky., native graduated cum laude from Coastal in December 2011 with a 3.613 GPA in exercise and sport science.
