Jeff Gelalich crushed this ninth inning pitch.MALIBU, Calif. — UCLA took a 6-2 win at Pepperdine’s Eddy D. Field Stadium Tuesday afternoon. The Bruins took advantage of five Waves errors and junior outfielder Jeff Gelalich drove in two runs, including a true big fly to right field up and over the Pepperdine scoreboard.

The Bruins bounced back from a tough loss Sunday afternoon when they blew a 10-5 lead to Purdue in the ninth inning.

After UCLA’s come-from-behind win, I talked with head coach John Savage, Gelalich and closer Scott Griggs, who struggled in Sunday’s loss and made it interesting in the ninth inning against Pepperdine.

Savage discussed getting back on the field after Sunday’s disappointing loss and making sure he got the pitchers that struggled right back on the bump in the midweek game. He also talked about what he said on a mound visit to Griggs after he walked two batters in the ninth and about the interesting brother versus brother matchup between Jeff Gelalich and Pepperdine’s Matt Gelalich:

Griggs also talked about the mound visit from Savage and the most important part of the closer mentality. The right-hander that hit 94-mph on Tuesday discussed the job David Berg and Ryan Deeter have done as the setup men, bridging the gap between the starters and Griggs at the backend of the bullpen.

Gelalich chatted about playing against his younger brother, Matt, for the first time ever. He said there was definitely some trash talk leading up to  Tuesday’s game. He also discussed what he saw on his monster home run and how the blast could be used as future trash talk fodder.
