South Carolina’s Ethan Carter Suspended

John Whittle of South Carolina 24/7 reports that South Carolina Gamecocks junior RHP Ethan Carter has been suspended by the team after it became public that Carter was arrested on March 9th for drunkenness. Carter is a transfer from Louisburg College and has appeared in five games out of the bullpen with a -0 record while not letting up a run yet.

South Carolina relief pitcher Ethan Carter was arrested last on Friday, March 9 in Five Points for drunkenness. Since his arrest, Carter, a junior, has continued to dress for all four games but has not pitched.

Carter was cited at 3:28 a.m. on Harden Street and was taken to a local hospital because he had a laceration on his chin. According to the arrest report, Carter had “very slurred” speech. Officers found him “laying motionless in a mulch bed.” Carter was observed to be “grossly intoxicated” and had slurred speech to the point that the offers could not make out any words.

Carter, according to the report, was placed under arrest but was taken to the hospital instead of jail because of the cut on his chin.

Interesting enough was the fact that Carter dressed for the previous four games before Friday night’s matchup against Kentucky. Coach Tanner stated after the Gamecocks 4-3 loss to Kentucky about his knowledge of the case saying:

“I found out today at 4:35. At 4:35 was when I was notified there was an arrest,” Tanner said. “Prior to that, I was completely unaware there was an arrest. I knew there was an incident and I made him inactive for the last few games. We brought him on the trip and I was notified, again, today at 4:35 that there was an arrest. I did not have that information previously.”

The normal protocol at South Carolina is to suspend any student-athlete for an arrest and this clearly was not done in the case. We should see what discipline comes down on Carter for the rest of this season.

What you also didn’t know about Ethan Carter is that he was previously a scholarship player for South Carolina back when he was a freshman. You may remember a certain reliever giving up a BLAST in the CWS a few years back, yeah that was Ethan. He was kicked off the team then for a DUI went to Louisburg and is now back on the Gamecocks team. In short, this kid needs to learn how to handle his liquor because his career is slipping away faster than that ball that left the park back when he was a freshman.
