ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A game at McCormick Field with UNC Chapel Hill plus a road date with defending national champion South Carolina highlights the 2012 UNC Asheville baseball schedule that was announced by Bulldog head coach Tom Smith today.

The 55-game schedule features 25 home games with two of those games at McCormick Field. The Bulldogs will host Western Carolina at McCormick on March 13 and then welcome the Tar Heels to Asheville for the first time ever on May 15.

“We have an ambitious schedule but it is a schedule I believe we can compete with,” declared Smith. “I like the number of home games we have this season. We were away a lot last year and that’s not the case in 2012.”

Smith is pleased to be bringing the Tar Heels to McCormick Field.

“I really appreciate UNC head coach Mike Fox agreeing to come to Asheville,” stated Smith. “That’s very kind of him and playing them should be a great experience for our team.”

Asheville opens the 2012 season with a three-game series at North Carolina Central (Feb. 17-19). Later in the week, the Bulldogs play at UNC Greensboro (Feb. 21)

The Bulldogs play the first of 23 games at Greenwood Field the weekend of Feb. 25-26 vs. St. Peters. The home opener will be on Feb. 25 with a double-header the following day.

Highlights of the schedule in March include a game at two-time defending national champion South Carolina on March 7, followed by a seven-game homestand. The Bulldogs host Morehead State (March 9-11) in a three-game series. Asheville plays its first McCormick Field game on March 13 against mountain rival Western Carolina before returning to Greenwood Field to open Big South Conference play vs. VMI (March 16-18).

In April, Asheville will have league series at home against Charleston Southern (April 6-7) and Liberty (April 20-22). The Bulldogs will play at UNC Chapel Hill on April 11 and Western Carolina on April 18.

The May schedule features a two-game home series vs. Georgia State (May 8-9) and a three-game series at Southern Conference power College of Charleston (May 11-13). The Bulldogs then host the Tar Heels on May 15 at 6 p.m. Asheville ends the regular season at Greenwood Field with a three-game series vs. Gardner-Webb (May 17-19).
