College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We conclude the countdown today at number 1 with Stanford RHP Mark Appel. The San Ramon, California native attended Monte Vista High School. He was a two year letterwinner where as a senior he appeared in nine games with an ERA of 0.90 ERA in 31.0 innings. He gave up just 21 hits, striking out 45 and walking just six over five starts while going 4-0 with three saves. He was picked in the 15th round by the Detroit Tigers but decided to head to Stanford.
As a freshman in 2010, he served primarily as a reliever appearing in 24 games with three spot starts. He finished the season going 2-1 with a 5.92 ERA over 38.0 innings. He gave up 44 hits for a .295 opponent batting average, striking out 26 and walking 19.
In the summer of 2010, he played for the Newport Gulls in the NECBL. He finished the summer in dominant fashion going 6-1 with a 1.87 ERA over 43.1 innings. He allowed just 33 hits and striking out 24 batters while being an NECBL All-Star.
Appel became the number 1 starter for the Cardinal in the 2011 season. He went 6-7 with a 3.02 ERA in 17 starts totaling 110.1 innings pitched. He struck out 86 with only 29 walks while giving up 114 hits for a .277 opponent batting average.
He started the summer with the 2011 USA Collegiate National Team where he made five appearances (one start) without receiving a decision and an ERA of 5.00 in nine innings. He struck out eleven batters while walking two batters. After his stint with USA Baseball, he went to the Cape Cod Baseball League to pitch for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He started two regular season games going 0-1 in 12 innings pitched with a 2.25 ERA. He struck out 15 batters while walking one. He also made a postseason start for the Red Sox pitching eight shutout innings striking out ten while walking two.

Now that the top 100 players have been posted, I will express my surprise that Tony Renda – Cal was left off the list. In 2010, he was first team Pac 10 and a Freshman All-American. As a sophomore in 2011, he was Pac 10 Player of the Year and led his team to the CWS.Â
Let’s be honest, there were at least 8 other players above Renda in the Pac-10 in the Overall leader catagories and he was number ???. Hmmm….. I’m still scratching my head about that one….
Maybe if his OPS didn’t drop 182 points, drew a walk more than once every 5 games, and didn’t run himself into outs on the basepaths, Renda would make the top 100. I’ve seen the guy mash but he’s not Top 100.
