Top 100 Countdown: 6. Marcus Stroman (Duke)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 6 with Duke junior RHP Marcus Stroman. The Medford, New York native attended Patchogue-Medford High School where he was a four year letter winner. He went 9-1 as a senior with a 0.25 ERA and 120 strikeouts while hitting .350 with six homers and 22 stolen bases. His junior season saw him go 7-2 on the mound with a 1.20 ERA and 96 strikeouts while batting .410 with a pair of homers and 30 steals. He was named Louisville Slugger’s Player of the Year and earning the Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the state of New York. He also won the Paul Gibson Award, which goes to the top pitcher on Long Island. He was selected in the 18th round (532nd overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals but decided to head to Duke.

As a freshman, he hit .265 with 44 hits, 26 runs scored and 20 RBI while going 6-4 on the mound with three saves and an ERA of 5.31 ERA over 57.2 innings. He was named ACC Freshman of the Year and a second team Freshman All-American by Baseball America.

He spent the summer of 2010 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Orleans Firebirds where he was a perfect 11-for-11 in save opportunities and did not allow a run in his 27 innings. He held CCBL hitters to just 12 hits and three walks while striking out 35.

As a sophomore in 2011, Stroman appeared in 39 games (33 starts) in the field hitting .250 with 15 RBI. On the mound, he made 17 appearances (eight starts) going 3-4 with a 2.80 ERA in 64.1 innings pitched. He struck out 90 batters while allowing 21 walks.

He spent the summer of 2011 with the USA Collegiate National Team pitching in seven games totaling 8.1 innings striking out 17 batters while allowing only a single walk. He did not allow a hit on the entire summer.
