College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 14 with St. John’s junior RHP Kyle Hanson. He is listed as a 6’7 195 pound junior righthanded pitcher out of Glen Cove New York and attended St. Dominic for high school. He was a two year letterwinner for the Bayhawks where he was named All-State and All-League in both seasons. The Milwaukee Brewers selected him in the 40th round (1,216 overall) in the 2009 MLB Draft but were not able to come to terms with him.

Kyle decided to continue his college career with the St. John’s Red Storm. He had a good freshman which saw him make 18 appearances (15 starts) while going 8-3 with a 3.71 ERA in a total of 94.2 innings. He ended up striking out 85 batters but did struggle with his control as he walked 33 batters. He was able to hold opponents to a .227 batting average against. He was named a Second Team Freshman All-American by the NCBWA after the solid campaign.

In 2011, he served as the number 1 starter for the Red Storm appearing in 17 games starting 15 while going 8-7 with a complete game and an ERA of 3.06. He ended up striking out 106 while walking 40 batters in 107.2 innings pitched holding opponents to a .223 batting average against.

He spent the summer of 2011 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox where he made 14 appearances (two starts) while going 0-1 with a 3.42 ERA in 26.1 innings pitched. He struck out 32 batters while walking 9.

Im sorry but this kid’s stats are worthy of 50-75 on the list, not in the top 15.

THE BREWERS would have hit the lottery big timeif they could have signed him in the 40th round … smart move on his part going back to school at the Div 1 level.Let me think back a weee bit …. I still dont know why some pro team draft high school kids- the pay offs just are not there  … the stats are in question for a high school kid , and the pay off’s a long shot at best . MLB teams should learn from there past that the safe bet is Div 1 players in there 3rd and 4th year …. almost a 58% better chance of putting them in the line up if you do the math…plus the stats are at least real and they are playing with real Ball players …and the stats are not done by some mother/father on the side lines at some high school team with vested interest. development of a D1 player is a safe bet, as they are playinng against the best  . its like buy a high risk stock,vs. a blue chip dividend company …. go ahead and gamble you may hit the jackpot – but you will more often lose then win . just my thoughts after 30 years in the game ….
