I feel compelled to start this post with an apology. I am sorry for my recent absence from the pages of College Baseball Daily. I do not want to make excuses, but I have been incredibly busy over the past two months, so please let me explain.

Thanksgiving break is always a fun time, but as most college students would agree, it is such a tease. Not only do we get a limited number of days at home, most of which are spent in a food coma, but we return to campus facing the home stretch of the semester. This stretch includes term papers, final projects, and the always dreaded exam week.

It looked grim at times, but I somehow found a way to survive everything the professors threw my way. To celebrate my escape from Exam Week, I took a quick trip to Atlanta to visit my girlfriend and her family. I had a great time in “The A”, but I could not stay for too long before I was forced to make the trip back home to Cincinnati.

As I hinted at in my previous posts, I have been battling an injury that has sidelined me since early September. I pushed through a long rehab program, but my progress was nowhere near where my trainers had hoped. Even though two separate MRI’s appeared to be clean, all of the doctors that I consulted still believed that I had a bad case of the “wonky elbow.”

So, on December 20th, I went under the knife. I needed Ulnar Nerve surgery, but my symptoms indicated that there was also something wrong with the dreaded UCL (Tommy John).

When I woke up in the recovery room, I looked down to see a large red contraption on my arm that resembled something out of the Transformers movies. In my drug induced state, the first thing that came to mind was to ask my nurse if I could exchange the red for a different color. I tried to explain that a black brace would match better with all of my clothes, but they simply laughed and said that red was my only option.

If you check out the MySpace style “Mirror Pic” below, you will understand my concern.

(The red clashes with our Furman purple)

I was disappointed about the unfortunate color of my brace, but I then came to realize that I forgot to ask the more important question, “Did he have to do the Tommy John?”

I could tell the answer to this question by the look on my Nurse’s face, before she could even begin to explain. My UCL was completely torn, which forced Dr. Kremchek to perform the full reconstruction.

Anyways, that is enough about me. The season will go on, and I know for a fact that our team is still poised to have a successful year. I am going to miss it a lot, but I have been talking with our coaches about ways that I can stay involved as a part of the team. Lucky for y’all, one of these ways is that I will continue to write my blogs.

I have a number of ideas of things to write about in my coming posts, so stay tuned in to CollegeBaseballDaily.com, and get excited for the upcoming baseball season! Just like Christmas, it is the most wonderful time of the year (even for those of us with a bionic arm).

I wish you a speedy recovery, Drake.  Hopefully you’ll be able to come back from the surgery even physically tougher and mentally stronger than before.
