Top 100 Countdown: 45. Josh Elander (TCU)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 45 with TCU junior catcher/outfielder Josh Elander. The Round Rock, Texas native attended Round Rock High School where he was a four year letter winner. As a senior, he picked up several awards including being named District 16-5A Most Valuable Player as a senior, first-team all-state, first-team all-Central Texas and an Under Armour All-American as a junior and senior. In the 2009 MLB Draft, the Washington Nationals selected him in the 39th round but he didn’t sign going to TCU to continue his education.  Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 46. John Simms (Rice)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 46 with Rice sophomore RHP John Simms. The Woodlands, Texas native attended College Park High School where he was a three year varsity player. As a senior, he went 8-1 record with a 1.07 ERA while striking out 123 batters in 65.1 innings. His junior season saw him have a strong season also going  9-2 with a 1.19 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 88 innings. Read the rest of this entry »

Northern Kentucky Moves To Division I, Will Join Atlantic Sun In 2012-13 Academic Year

Northern KentuckyHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University announced today that it has accepted an invitation to join the Atlantic Sun Conference and will begin reclassification to NCAA Division I status in athletics during the 2012-13 academic year.

The Atlantic Sun’s Board of Presidents voted unanimously Tuesday to extend the invitation to NKU, pending its successful reclassification. The NKU Board of Regents voted unanimously this afternoon to accept the invitation from the Atlantic Sun and reclassify.

“This day has been a long time in the making,” said NKU President James Votruba. “Today we begin a new era not just for our athletics program, but for our institution and our region. Division I athletics will help position the university regionally and nationally in a way that otherwise would not be possible.

North Carolina Central releases 2012 Schedule

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 47 with Purdue junior RHP Nick Wittgren. The Lafayette, Indiana native attended McCutcheon High School where he won three letters in baseball while picking up three in basketball and four in tennis. As a senior, he hit .395 at the plate while striking out 55 on the mound as he was named the team MVP and leading them to a sectional title.  Read the rest of this entry »

St. Petersburg Head Coach Rob Francis Arrested in Child Sex Sting

Francis has posted bond of $5,100 and told to stay off the St. Petersburg campus as he was placed on administrative leave.  (Link)

Current St. Petersburg College head baseball coach Rob Francis was arrested as part of a Child Sex Sting in Orlando according to a report in The Orlando Sentinel. Francis has previously served as the director of baseball operations at Ole Miss from 2008-2010 seasons. Read the rest of this entry »

Western Carolina releases 2012 Schedule

Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina fifth-year head baseball coach Bobby Moranda today finalized and released the 2012 schedule for his squad that opens at home with a three-game series on February 17-19. College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 48 with Oklahoma redshirt sophomore LHP Jordan John. The 6’3 200 pound southpaw is from Corpus Christi, Texas and attended Calallen High School where he won three letters playing under Steve Chapman. As a senior, he went 13-0 striking out 125 with a microscopic ERA of 0.26 in 82 innings pitched. He was named USA Today First Team All-American, district MVP and all-state.
