College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the countdown today at number 49 with NC State junior RHP Chris Overman. The Charlotte, North Carolina native attended Myers Park High School. As a senior, he was named to The Charlotte Observer’s All-Mecklenburg team. He also brough the team to a Myers Park to a 19-9 record and the Southwestern 4-A Conference tournament championship, pitching a complete game in the tournament championship game.
Overman saw limited action as a freshman appearing in eight games (two starts) going 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA. He struck out 12 batters while walking five in 11.2 innings pitched. He made two appearances in the Coastal Plains League with the Forest City Owls going a total of two innings with a 13.50 ERA.
He came back with a solid sophomore season with the Wolfpack getting strong throughout the season. He finished the year with a 6-3 overall record including a team high seven saves with a team low ERA of 2.39. He struck out 45 batters while walking only seven in 49 innings pitched. In his last eight appearances, he did not allow an earned run during 12 2/3 innings of work.
He spent the summer of 2011 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Harwich Mariners getting coached by Boston College assistant Steve Englert. He went 2-0 with a save and a 0.00 ERA in a team-high 19 appearances during the regular season, allowing 11 hits and striking out 25 in 28 1/3 innings. In the postseason, he continued his dominance making four appearances, all scoreless, in the Cape League playoffs and recording a save in each of Harwich’s three postseason series-clinching victories. He also pitched a perfect inning in the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game.
He enters the 2012 season on a streak of 45 2/3 consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run including the end of the 2011 collegiate season and the summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
