Top 100 Countdown: 65 E.J. Encinosa (Miami, FL)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 65 with Miami (FL) junior righthanded pitcher E.J. Encinosa. The Miami, Florida native attended Coral Park High School where he played Julio Estrada. He missed his junior season with an injury but returned as a senior going 2-0 with a 3.69 ERA. During his sophomore season, he went 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA. Read the rest of this entry »

UNC’s Cody Stiles dismissed from Team

Cody Stiles was dismissed from UNC baseball team according to multiple media reports in the Chapel Hill area. He was arrested on early Saturday morning for underage drinking and resisting arrest. Stiles was expected to be a key contributor to the UNC pitching staff in 2012. Last season, he went 4-0 in 12 appearances including eight starts while having an ERA of 2.43. Cal Poly Releases 2012 Schedule

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Home series against Oklahoma State, Washington, San Diego State and UC Irvine highlight the 2012 Cal Poly baseball schedule announced by Mustang director of athletics Don Oberhelman and head coach Larry Lee.

Cal Poly will open the 2012 season by hosting Oklahoma State for a three-game set Feb. 17-19 and also will entertain Washington for three games March 9-11 and San Diego State, coached by Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, for a quartet of games March 23-25.

Army Releases 2012 Schedule

WEST POINT, N.Y. –
Army baseball head coach Joe Sottolano released the Black Knights’ 2012 schedule this week. The rigorous slate features 19 home games at Doubleday Field, including three Patriot League series.

Army will open its season the third weekend of February (17-19) as the Black Knights travel to High Point, N.C., to face High Point in a three-game series. The team will then make the trek to Washington, D.C., for a three-game set versus George Washington the following weekend (Feb. 25-26).

Clemson releases 2012 Schedule

Clemson, SC – Thirty-five home games, 27 games against 2011 NCAA Tournament teams, and two games at Fluor Field in Greenville, SC highlight Clemson’s 56-game, 2012 regular-season baseball schedule, released on Wednesday. South Carolina releases 2012 Schedule

Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina baseball team has announced its schedule for the 2012 season featuring 24 games against 2011 NCAA Tournament teams as well as 35 home games at Carolina Stadium. The back-to-back national champions open the season on Friday, February 17 hosting a three-game series vs. VMI. Kent State releases 2012 Schedule

KENT, Ohio — Eighth-year Kent State baseball head coach Scott Stricklin announced the 2012 schedule Tuesday (Nov. 15).

Kent State’s slate consists of four games against two 2011 NCAA Tournament participants, 27 Mid-American Conference contests, 21 home dates at Olga A. Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium and the Sixth Annual Diamond Classic For Kids against rival Akron at Canal Park. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 100 Countdown: 66. Justin Amlung (Louisville)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 66 with Louisville redshirt junior RHP Justin Amlung. The 6’0 175 pound righthander comes from Louisville, Kentucky and St. Xavier High School. He was a two year letter winner for coach John Jefferson going  7-1 with a 1.55 ERA and 50 strikeouts as a senior and was 6-3 with a 2.09 ERA and 45 strikeouts during his junior season. Top 100 Countdown: 67. Karsten Whitson (Florida)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 67 with Florida RHP Karsten Whitson. The Chipley, Florida native attended Chipley High School where he became one of the top pitchers in the entire country. As a senior, he went 7-3 with a 0.62 earned run average and a school-record 123 strikeouts in 55 innings. In the entire season, he allowed only 16 hits while issuing 15 walks. His best start came against Walton High School in a 2-1 victory when he struck out 19 batters. He was named a first-team All-American by Baseball America and was first-team all-state in Class 3A. He was selected with the 9th overall pick by the San Diego Padres. After some tough negotiations, he decided to head to Gainesville to play for Kevin O’Sullivan. Read the rest of this entry »

The Inside Pitch: Tennessee

Can Knoxville, Tennessee become the hotbed of college baseball in the SEC?

If new Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano has anything to do with that, it will happen under his watch. The Vols baseball program has had some tough times over the last couple of years. They finished the 2011 season with a 25-29 record and a 7-23 SEC record for a last place finish.

“The focus of the fall for us was seeing the talent we have for the upcoming season.” said Serrano. “We implemented our system this fall with the players learning it well. We want squads to come into Knoxville and when they leave town say that Tennessee squad plays hard nosed baseball.” Read the rest of this entry »

Georgia Southern releases 2012 Schedule

STATESBORO, Ga. – Head Coach Rodney Hennon released the Georgia Southern Eagles’ 2012 baseball schedule which includes 56 games and 29 home dates for the defending Southern Conference Tournament champions. The Eagles open the season with an eight game home stand, beginning on Friday, Feb. 17 when the UT Martin Skyhawks visit J.I. Clements stadium for a three-game weekend series. College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 68 with Stanford sophomore infielder Brian Ragira. The Arlington, Texas native attended James Martin Senior High School where he played three years of varsity baseball. As a senior, he was a two way player hitting .358 with a .479 on-base percentage and .632 slugging percentage including eight doubles and six homers while driving in 35 runs.  Read the rest of this entry »
