College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the countdown today at number 60 with UConn junior LJ Mazzilli. He won three letters in high school between Greenwich (CT) High School and Iona Prep while graduating from IMG Pendelton School in Florida.
As a freshman in 2010, he appeared in 36 games with 93 at-bats batting .312 with 29 hits and eight walks. He was able to record an on-base percentage of .373 and a slugging percentage of .548 as he helped lead the squad to the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
He spent the summer of 2010 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Wareham Gatemen hitting .227 with a homer and five RBI in 30 games.
In 2011, he became an everyday starter starting in 65 games with a .338 batting average with 93 hits including 23 doubles and 32 runs batted in. He was selected as an alternate for Team USA where he hit .143 in six games and had two RBI. He spent the rest of the summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Wareham Gatemen for the second straight year. He hit .223 with seven RBI in 29 games played.

Brian, is this guy Lee Mazzilli’s son? Having said that, I still don’t get the rationale for him being ranked ahead of guys such as Stanford’s Rugira or Rice’s Kubitza. Sorry, but it makes no sense.
It is Lee’s son….The kid has hit both seasons at UConn dealing with an arm injury as a freshman and now becoming an everyday starter for the Huskies. He will have much more pressure on him this season.
