PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph’s head baseball coach Fritz Hamburg has announced the Hawks’ 2012 schedule, which features 26 home contests on the 54-game slate. The 2012 season is scheduled to be the first year of play at the new baseball facility on the James J. Maguire ’58 Campus.
The new field is slated to open on Friday, March 9 with a game against Iona. The contest with the Gaels is the first of 11 consecutive home games in 17 days for the Hawks; the homestand is part of a stretch that sees SJU play 15 of 16 games at home.
The Hawks will open the season against Bryant on Friday, February 17 in the USA Baseball Complex Classic in North Carolina. SJU will play three games at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary; the Hawks will then take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack in Raleigh on Sunday, February 19.
After a weekend series at East Tennessee State, Saint Joseph’s will travel across the country for six games in Seattle, Washington. The Hawks’ trip to the Pacific Northwest features four games at the University of Washington and a pair of games at Seattle University.
Returning home, SJU will play single games against Iona, Central Connecticut State, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Villanova, Binghamton, Buffalo, Saint Peter’s, and Lehigh before a three-game set against Bucknell closes out the homestand.
The Crimson and Gray then travel to Temple for the first round of the 2012 Liberty Bell Classic before returning home to open Atlantic 10 play against Rhode Island.
Lehigh or Delaware awaits in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic before SJU heads to Saint Louis for a weekend set against the Billikens. A midweek matchup with Delaware precedes a visit from Massachusetts and then a trip to defending conference champion Charlotte.
The Hawks will then host Rider before hitting the road for the second straight weekend, heading to St. Bonaventure to close out April.
The Hawks close out the home portion of the conference slate with series against George Washington and La Salle before playing the final four games on the road at Delaware and at Xavier.
The Atlantic 10 Championship will be held from May 23 to 26 at Fordham’s Houlihan Park in the Bronx.
