Top 100 Countdown: 66. Justin Amlung (Louisville)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 66 with Louisville redshirt junior RHP Justin Amlung. The 6’0 175 pound righthander comes from Louisville, Kentucky and St. Xavier High School. He was a two year letter winner for coach John Jefferson going  7-1 with a 1.55 ERA and 50 strikeouts as a senior and was 6-3 with a 2.09 ERA and 45 strikeouts during his junior season.

After taking a redshirt in 2009, he made 20 appearances (10 starts) going 5-2 with a 4.27 ERA in 65.1 innings during the 2010 season. He ended up striking out 55 batters while walking only 14 and holding opponents to a .286 batting average against.

Amlung became the number 1 starter during 2011 for the Cardinals having an outstanding season going 10-2 with a 2.31 ERA in 15 starts. He held opponents to a batting average of .206 while striking out 80 batters and walking 27. He was selected in the 39th round by the Cincinnati Reds. He spent the summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Wareham Gatemen. He went 3-1 with an ERA of 1.76 in seven starts. Several news outlets reported that Amlung had signed with the Reds but in actuality he decided to return to Louisville for his redshirt junior season.

    Looks like his arm drags behind the rest of his body on his delivery.  All his weight has already moved forward and then his arm races to catch up.  I’d be worried about shoulder problems.
